Abstract

This special issue of Computer Graphics Forum(CGF) contains research papers presented at the Eleventh Eurographics/ACMSIGGRAPH Symposium on Geometry Processing 2013 (SGP), held July 3--5, 2013, in Genova, Italy. SGP is the premier venue for research in geometry processing. Entering its second decade, SGP continues to attract and publish high-quality research works in the area and serve as a focused meeting point for establishing new friendships and collaborations.

Abstract

This book is a guide for researchers and practitioners to the new frontiers of 3D shape analysis and the complex mathematical tools most methods rely on. The target reader includes students, researchers and professionals with an undergraduate mathematics background, who wish to understand the mathematics behind shape analysis. The authors begin with a quick review of basic concepts in geometry, topology, differential geometry, and proceed to advanced notions of algebraic topology, always keeping an eye on the application of the theory, through examples of shape analysis methods such as 3D segmentation, correspondence, and retrieval. A number of research solutions in the field come from advances in pure and applied mathematics, as well as from the re-reading of classical theories and their adaptation to the discrete setting. In a world where disciplines (fortunately) have blurred boundaries, the authors believe that this guide will help to bridge the distance between theory and practice. Table of Contents: Acknowledgments / Figure Credits / About this Book / 3D Shape Analysis in a Nutshell / Geometry, Topology, and Shape Representation / Differential Geometry and Shape Analysis / Spectral Methods for Shape Analysis / Maps and Distances between Spaces / Algebraic Topology and Topology Invariants / Differential Topology and Shape Analysis / Reeb Graphs / Morse and Morse-Smale Complexes / Topological Persistence / Beyond Geometry and Topology / Resources / Bibliography / Authors' Biographies.

Abstract

TheconferenceonSemanticsAnddigital Media Technologies (SAMT) covers a wide scope of subjects that contribute, from di?erent perspectives, to n- row the large disparity between the low-level descriptors of multimedia content and the richness and subjectivity of semantics in user queries and human int- pretations of content: The Semantic Gap. The second international conference SAMT 2007 took place in Italy, in the beautiful town of Genova, and cont- ued to gather interest and high-quality papers from across Europe and beyond, bringing together forums, projects, institutions and individuals investigatingthe integrationofknowledge,semanticsandlow-levelmultimedia processing,incl- ing new emerging media and application areas. Inresponsetothecallforpapers,55papersweresubmitted.Afterathorough review process, only 16 contributions were accepted as full papers with oral presentation, in addition, 20 contributions were selected as short papers. We would like to thank all the members of the Technical Program Committee, the authors of submitted papers, and the additional reviewers for their e?orts in setting the quality of this volume. The conference program also includes two invited keynote talks from Ste?en Staab and Remco Veltkamp and we are very gratefulto themfortheir insightfulpresentations. This volumeincludes aspecial section with three awarded short papers from the K-Space PhD Workshop that took place in October 2007 in Berlin.
