Abstract

This is an examination of study and research in medical ethics. It consists of writings by a variety of authors from clinical medicine and from philosophy. The volume considers the role and scope of medical ethics and its relation to wider moral education and to public morality, and appraises different ways in which medical ethics may be pursued. Additionally it explores the involvement in medical ethics of applied philosophy and asks whether the popularization of virtue ethics offers medical ethics a way forward.

Abstract

The purpose of medical humanities is to improve the delivery of effective health care through a better understanding of disease - in society, and in the individual. The interfaces between the science of medicine and the arts, philosophy, sociology and law interpret causes and effects of disease. The field of medical ethics is the most prominent offspring of this wider debate, yet the context of disease in the life of the individual and of society is profound and far-reaching. The influences of medicine on the humanities and vice versa are all around, yet only recently have they been recognised in the wider world of health care.

Abstract

The topics covered in this book have been specifically chosen to give guidance to surgeons established in practice and those embarking on their careers. Examples include the changing management in the treatment of the catastrophic abdominal wall, perianal Crohn’s disease in the biological era, decision making in rectal cancer that responds to radiotherapy, and the assessment of outcomes in colorectal cancer surgery. Recent years have seen the introduction of technical advances with respect to robotics in colorectal surgery and trans-anal total meso-rectal excision, and which are rapidly becoming established in clinical practice. Chapters also cover those aspects of colorectal practice, which are common to all, and provide guidance on management of topics including complications of radiotherapy, management of pouch dysfunction and iatrogenic complications in pelvic cancer surgery.

Abstract

Colorectal surgery has been evolving rapidly over recent years and the COVID pandemic has necessitated a critical approach to all aspects of care. This book offers an up-to-date appraisal of the increasingly used neoadjuvant therapy. In many situations a multidisciplinary approach is taken to achieve high quality and successful outcomes. In addition, topics such as the management of the open abdomen, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, artificial intelligence and modern management of inflammatory bowel disease are covered. Written by experts in their field, this book is of interest to both trainees and practicing surgeons in coloproctology.
