The manuscript Illuminated Bible preserved by the Jewish Community of Venice is far more than a book. In its first pages one can find an interpretative debate between different Jewish writing traditions. A comparison that is literal but also figurative, with the use of colors, shapes, imaginative and realistic images. A small object, rescued from the book-burnings decreed during the Countereformation, from iconoclastic censorship, from the robberies and from the massacres of the twentieth century. A book that is the product of the encounter between the Jewish civilization, attentive to the written word, and the Italian culture producing wonderful artistic forms. An entire universe is restored to us by a mysterious time machine. Today we take up the task of fortifying this time machine and its restoration, in order to ensure that the transmission chain does not cease with us, but rather that it is continued by generations to come.

Accompanying an exhibition at Les Enluminures, New York, this scholarly book includes chapters on the art, iconography, and historical context of a remarkable medieval manuscript: a Haggadah with seventy-five watercolor paintings created in the circle of the famous artist Giovannino de' Grassi (d. 1398) in Milan in the late fourteenth century. The book includes contributions from several internationally recognized scholars as well as a full physical description of the Lombard Haggadah, and many colour reproductions. Extensive comparisons with other art works complete the publication.0Telling the story of the flight of the Jews from Egypt based on the biblical book of Exodus, the Haggadah was - and still is - used during the Seder, the ritual meal of the first night of Passover. The text of this remarkable manuscript has been richly illustrated by many artists in different countries for over seven hundred years. With its seventy-five illustrations, occupying the margins of almost every page, this manuscript expresses the elegant language of the Gothic International style in Lombardy.00Exhibition: Les Enluminures, New York, USA (12.04-20.04.2019).
