Abstract

Whole Body Interaction is “The integrated capture and processing of human signals from physical, physiological, cognitive and emotional sources to generate feedback to those sources for interaction in a digital environment” (England 2009). Whole Body Interaction looks at the challenges of Whole Body Interaction from the perspectives of design, engineering and research methods. How do we take physical motion, cognition, physiology, emotion and social context to push boundaries of Human Computer Interaction to involve the complete set of human capabilities? Through the use of various applications the authors attempt to answer this question and set a research agenda for future work. Aimed at students and researchers who are looking for new project ideas or to extend their existing work with new dimensions of interaction.

Abstract

"Design is the cornerstone of creating and producing any structure, product or item either for bespoke use or mass reproduction. Anything that is created, constructed or manufactured relies on design whether for aesthetic, functional or critical purposes. Of paramount importance is the designer's understanding of the intended use and the application of the product and their subsequent ability to translate this into a finished design. Of equal importance to the designer is an understanding of the operating environment in which the product is to be used and how this environment is controlled by such considerations as regulations, standards or social norms. These considerations may have a direct influence (such as the regulations surrounding health and safety) or indirect influence (such as ethical or moral concerns) on the design process. Additionally, the actual individuals who will use the product should be considered, as well as any others who may come into contact with it. What is important in any design process is that the criteria of the design requirement are developed within this sphere of considerations and; that it is capable of being subsequently produced accurately to that requirement. This is known as the input-process-output cycle"--

Abstract

This book combines work from curators, digital artists, human computer interaction researchers and computer scientists to examine the mutual benefits and challenges posed when working together to support digital art works in their many forms. In Curating the Digital we explore how we can work together to make space for art and interaction. We look at the various challenges such as the dynamic nature of our media, the problems posed in preserving digital art works and the thorny problems of how we assess and measure audience’s reactions to interactive digital work. Curating the Digital is an outcome of a multi-disciplinary workshop that took place at SICHI2014 in Toronto. The participants from the workshop reflected on the theme of Curating the Digital via a series of presentations and rapid prototyping exercises to develop a catalogue for the future digital art gallery. The results produce a variety of insights both around the theory and philosophy of curating digital works, and also around the practical and technical possibilities and challenges. We present these complimentary chapters so that other researchers and practitioners in related fields will find motivation and imagination for their own work.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Task Models and Diagrams for User Interface Design, TAMODIA 2009, held in Brussels, Belgium, in September 2009. The 12 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions for inclusion in the book. The workshop features current research and gives some indication of the new directions in which task analysis theories, methods, techniques and tools are progressing. The papers are organized in topical sections on business process, design process, model driven approach, task modeling, and task models and UML.
