"The Outside: Migration as Life in Morocco traces how migration has come to occupy a striking place in the lives of many Moroccans. A full 10 percent of the population now lives outside the country, affecting individual and collective life in countless unanticipated ways. In this intimate ethnography of rural Morocco, Alice Elliot considers the experience of migration from the point of view of the families and people, mostly women, who have not (yet) left. Elliot shows how the specter of migration has permeated life, from kinship relations to intimacy between spouses and to the imagination of the future. The Outside seeks to answer the question, what is migration when it becomes the very foundation on which forms of social and individual life are built? New understandings of migration emerge through its intimate textures as Elliot shows how it has become, in some parts of the world, a distinctive condition of everyday life"--

Research into mobility is an exciting challenge for the social sciences that raises novel social, cultural, spatial and ethical questions. At the heart of these empirical and theoretical complexities lies the question of methodology: how can we best capture and understand a planet in flux? Methodologies of Mobility speaks beyond disciplinary boundaries to the methodological challenges and possibilities of engaging with a world on the move. With scholars continuing to face different forms and scales of mobility, this volume strategically traces innovative ways of designing, applying and reflecting on both established and cutting-edge methodologies of mobility.

This thesis investigates the imaginaries of Italy through the experiences' description of - new first, second/third generations - Italian graduate students living and currently pursuing Master or PhD programmes at the University of Leuven. The research unfolds and compares the participants' conceptions of Italy guided by the leading research question: 'how the meta- and empirical worlds of people are interacting and are set in motion?' More precisely, the query will be disclosed focusing on three issues: (1) how is Italy 'imagined', (2) how are images of Italy produced, and (3) how do imaginaries open up to various courses of action. Based on an ethnographic research and through the lenses of an anthropological perspective, the thesis ought to demonstrate that whilst imaginaries may be conceived as mere fantasies or dreams - thus as a sort of a meta-world of intangible images -, such conception would be restrictive. In fact, the empirical research shows that the potential of imaginaries lies in their ability to influence the lives and the identities of the people involved, and the ways they behave and choose. In a nutshell, at the heart of the research lies an endeavour to disentangle contents, formation and co-influence of meta-worlds, imaginaries and empirical life-experiences.
