Abstract

This book examines Nerva's imperial coin iconography in concert with contemporary laudatory texts that praise the emperor. As such, this study has important implications for the agents behind the selection and formulation of such images in the late first and early second century.

Abstract

"This book tells the history of the ancient Roman Colosseum--its architecture and construction, its uses for spectator sport, and the political situation around it. The book tells the story of how this monument fits into Roman society and into imperial dynasty. Trained as both an art historian and a Roman historian, the author deploys an interdisciplinary approach to discussing the Colosseum. Elkins has written the book for a general audience and for undergraduate students."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Roman imagery and iconography are typically studied under the more general umbrella of Roman art and in broader, medium-specific studies. This handbook focuses primarily on visual imagery in the Roman world, examined by context and period, and the evolving scholarly traditions of iconographic analysis and visual semiotics that have framed the modern study of these images. As such topics-or, more directly, the isolation of these topics from medium-specific or strictly temporal evaluations of Roman art-are uncommon in monograph-length studies, our goal is that this handbook will be an important reference for both the communicative value of images in the Roman world and the tradition of iconographical analysis.

Abstract

William E. Metcalf is a prominent name in numismatics, but is also universally recognized among those who study Roman history and archaeology. Known especially for his many contributions to Roman and Byzantine coinage, it is difficult to find a book or article that does not cite his work. A generous scholar, one can see his name in the acknowledgments in works by numismatists and scholars in adjacent disciplines who incorporate numismatic evidence. It is thus appropriate - and overdue - that his former students and colleagues present this Festschrift in recognition of Metcalf 's impact on our discipline. It would be impossible to incorporate contributions from all of his colleagues and friends; the contributors herein represent but a fraction of those who would honor him.

Abstract

The Late Roman fort at Yotvata is located in the southern Arava some 40 km north of Eilat/Aqaba (ancient Aila). The modern Hebrew name of the site is based on its suggested identification with biblical Jotbathah (Deut 10:7), where the Israelites encamped during their desert wanderings. The modern Arabic name of the site, Ein Ghadian, may preserve the ancient Roman name Ad Dianam. Because the Late Roman fort at Yotvata is visible as a low mound next to the Arava road, it has long been known to scholars. Each June between 2003 and 2007, Gwyn Davies (Florida International University) and Jodi Magness (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) co-directed excavations here. This volume provides the results of those excavations, adding substantially to our knowledge of Roman defenses in the third and fourth centuries of the Common Era, along the trade route that traversed the southern Arava and on the eastern frontier of the Empire.
