Animal rights is one the pre-eminent liberation struggles of our time. Yet the rise of a more sympathetic attitude towards animals began in Western Europe in the eighteenth century, when a number of progressive thinkers and writers recognized that animals felt pain and experienced pleasure and might therefore deserve to be granted inalienable rights. Thus was born the diverse movement that now stands on the brink of transforming our relationship to the natural world.
