Abstract

The book 'Typology' presents around 160 buildings in Hong Kong, Rome, New York, and Buenos Aires that have been analyzed by the chair of Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. This selective and subjective inventory of metropolitan and essentially anonymous 20th century building production provides a basis for urban project creation. In this book, each building is documented with layout and floor plan, axonometric projection, photograph, and key information. The essays by Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein and four texts by other authors explain the interactions between the contexts, especially the governing urban rule sets and the buildings, and show the potential for the design of a contemporary urban architecture. With essays by Emanuel Christ, Christoph Gantenbein, Fernando Diez, Francesco Garofalo, Carol Gerselle Krinsky, and Hendrik Tieben.

Abstract

In the third volume of the new series exploring the foundational theories and works of architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, more than 150 buildings are documented through floor plans, axonometric projections, recent color photographs, and halftones. The buildings, many of them relatively unknown, were chosen in order to provide a basis for looking at metropolitan design in the twentieth century, and they show the patterns and differences found in architecture from around the world. Included is an essay that provides meaningful context for the buildings and examines how local government and zoning practices guide architecture. A powerful example of the unlimited potential for urban design, Typology offers a new point of view in municipal planning and architecture.

Abstract

For the first time, Christ & Gantenbein present a comprehensive catalog of their work. The monograph, published in three volumes, captures their architectural endeavors from 1998 to 2023: an annotated retrospective of the design, planning, and execution of over 160 projects. The innovative book concept, developed in collaboration with Basel based graphic designer Ronnie Fueglister, creates a concise visual impression for the chronological survey of their body of work. Each volume is accompanied by complementary texts by various authors and detailed information, providing an even deeper insight into this carefully curated collection.
