Abstract

This paper aims to show the most important tendencies of the first Portuguese version of the famous and wondrous adventures of the baron of Münchhausen. This is an untitled text which was published by José Daniel Rodrigues da Costa in Almocreve de Petas (1797-1800), at that time a well-known and very popular magazine. After concluding that the Portuguese adaptation is somehow due not to R. E. Raspe's but to G. A. Bürger's version, the author analyzes some representative changes introduced by Rodrigues da Costa, relating them to the specific production and reception conditions which existed in late 18th century Portugal. As a matter of fact, in an act (perhaps) of self-censorship and (certainly) of adaptation to the conventional taste of the readers, the hero's social status was transformed and all socio-political, erotic and ethical-religious issues were eradicated from the text.

Abstract

This selection of 30 contributions (3 workshop reports, 27 papers from 14 countries) concentrates on intercultural communication in its broadest sense: themes vary from dissident translation under the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines and translation as a process of power in the 3rd world context to drama translation and the role of the cognitive sciences in translation theory. Topics of current interest such as media interpreting, news translation, advertising, subtitling and the ethics of translation have a prominent position, as does the Workshop 'Contact as Conflict' which discusses the phenomenon of the hybrid text as a result of the translation process. The volume closes with the EST Focus debate on thorny issues of Methodology, Policy and Training. The volume demonstrates clearly the richness and breadth of the topics dealt with in Translation Studies today along with its complex interaction with neighbouring disciplines.

Abstract

Antonin Artaud (1896-1948), a French author many consider to be an innovative genius, has grafted some of his writings onto texts written by other authors. Based on the analysis of one of his texts, in casu the Avertissement which precedes Le Moine de Lewis raconté par Antonin Artaud, we intend to define this activity as rewriting. In order to better understand Artaud's poetry, we also analyse his texts on Balthus, a painter. Indeed, the way in which Artaud creates from certain texts can be compared to the way in which Balthus proceeds. To reach this definition, we referred to Lacoue-Labarthe's concept of mimesis such as it appears in Typographies, l'imitation des modernes.

Abstract

"Has the language industry of the 21st century been racing ahead of the translation profession and leaving translators behind? Or are translators adapting to new sociotechnical realities and societal demands, and if so, how? The chapters in this volume seek to shed light on the profiles and position of human translators in the current decade. This collection draws together the work of leading authors to reflect on the constantly evolving lang industry. The eight chapters present new perspectives on, and concepts of, translation in a digital world. They highlight the shifts taking place in the sociotechnical environment of translation and the need to address changing buyer needs and market demands with new services, profiles and training. In doing so, they share a common focus on the added value that human translators can and do bring to bear as adaptive, creative, digitally literate experts. Addressing an international readership, this volume is of interest to advanced students and researchers in translation and interpreting studies, and professionals in the global language industry"--
