Grapholinguistics, the multifaceted study of writing systems, is growing increasingly popular, yet to date no coherent account covering and connecting its major branches exists. This book now gives an overview of the core theoretical and empirical questions of this field. A treatment of the structure of writing systems--their relation to speech and language, their material features, linguistic functions, and norms, as well as the different types in which they come--is complemented by perspectives centering on the use of writing, incorporating psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic issues such as reading processes or orthographic variation as social action. Examples stem from a variety of diverse systems such as Chinese, English, Japanese, Arabic, Thai, German, and Korean, which allows defining concepts in a broadly applicable way and thereby constructing a comparative grapholinguistic framework that provides readers with important tools for studying any writing system. The book emphasizes that grapholinguistics is a discipline in its own right, inviting discussion and further research in this up-and-coming field as well as an overdue integration of writing into general linguistic discussion.

What is the level of complexity of sentences and utterances? How do they relate to schemata? In the context of these questions, the book explores the basic elements in the relationship between the language system and linguistic usage and the basic analytic units in syntax. The handbook thereby bridges competency-based and performance-based approaches and also incorporates research on sign language and gesture. Ziel des Handbuchs Satz, Äußerung, Schema ist es, das komplexe Verhältnis von Langue, Parole und Schematisierung auf syntaktischer Ebene schulenübergreifend auszuloten. Statt tradierte Gräben weiter zu zementieren, soll auf diese Weise eine Brücke zwischen kompetenzorientierten und performanzorientierten Ansätzen gebaut werden. Neue Impulse erhält der Band auch dadurch, dass die Gebärdensprach- und Gestenforschung in die Diskussion einbezogen wird. In Teil I stehen grundlagentheoretische Überlegungen zum Verhältnis von System und Performanz und zur Einheitenbildung in der Syntax im Zentrum. Teil II umfasst Beiträge, die den Satzbegriff aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven reflektieren (oberflächennah, interaktional, generativ, schulgrammatisch), und ergänzt diese um Überlegungen zu Verbvalenz und Ellipse. In Teil III werden mögliche Einheitenbildungen in der gesprochenen, geschriebenen und gebärdeten Sprache behandelt und Ansätze zu einer Syntax redebegleitender Gesten vorgestellt. Teil IV bezieht ‚Satz‘ und ‚Äußerung‘ auf Aspekte der Schemabildung und die Analyse von Form-Funktionseinheiten, wie sie im Kontext der Konstruktionsgrammatik diskutiert werden.
