Hauptquellen für das Martyrium, das der römische Statthalter in Trier Anfang Oktober 291 an den christlichen Angehörigen der Thebäischen Legion unter ihrem Führer Thyrsus sowie an der christlichen Führungselite der Bewohner unter Senator und Konsul Palmatius vollzog, sind die hier vorgestellten Historia martyrum Treverensium (‚Historie der Trierer Märtyrer‘) und die Passio martyrum Trevirensium (‚Das Leiden der Trierer Märtyrer‘). Die zwei jeweils einzigen (Passio) bzw. ältesten (Historia) Kodizes (alle noch 11. Jahrhundert) lagern in der Wissenschaftlichen Bibliothek der Stadt Trier und werden in diesem Band zum ersten Mal korrekt textkritisch ediert, ins Deutsche übersetzt sowie ausführlich erläutert. Trierer Straßennamen rund um die Paulinkirche (Thebäer, Thyrsus, Palmatius, Leander, Soter) halten die Erinnerung an das Massaker sichtbar wach.

Die von unbekannten Autoren vermutlich in der Abtei St. Matthias verfassten Gesta Treverorum, Triers erstes und bedeutendstes Geschichtswerk, reichen von der mythischen Stadtgründung durch den Assyrerprinzen Trebetas im Jahr 2053 v. Chr. über die legendenhaften ersten Bischöfe Eucharius, Valerius und Maternus bis Erzbischof Bruno (1102?1124). Die daran anschlie�ende Continuatio prima endet mit dem Amtsantritt des Erzbischofs Adalbero (1132). Die vorliegende Ausgabe bietet den lateinischen Text und die deutsche Übersetzung in lesefreundlicher Synopse. Die Übersetzung erfolgt nach strengen philologischen Kriterien und liefert zusammen mit dem ausführlichen philologisch-historischen Kommentar den Schlüssel zum Verständnis dieser wertvollen historischen Quelle.
