"High atop a hill in a small town in Karnataka, southern India, is an awe-inspiring statue of a meditating monk. Colossal, and of heroic proportions, the nude figure is immersed in contemplation, oblivious of the coiling creepers around his legs and arms or the slithering snakes in the ant-hills at his feet. An elusive smile lights up his beatific face. At the base of this boulder strewn hill with barren rocky slopes, lies a shimmering sheet of water. The town derives its name, Shravana Belgola, from the term Shravana, denoting the meditating monk on the crest of the hill, and the word Belgola, signifying the waters at the foot of the hill. For the last two hundred years, these two distinctive features describe, as well as identity, this pilgrimage place of the Jains."
