In Revolution and History, Arif Dirlik examines the application of the materialist conception of history to the analysis of Chinese history in a period when Marxist ideas first gained currency in Chinese intellectual circles. His argument raises questions about earlier interpretations of Marxist historiography by scholars who based their opinions primarily on post-1949 writings.

« Ce qui arrive en Chine arrive dans le monde, et ce qui arrive dans le monde arrive en Chine ». Ce simple énoncé, aux faux airs de tropisme, assume en une phrase toute la radicalité d'Arif Dirlik. Historien américain d'origine turque, Arif Dirlik (1940-2017) possède une conscience aigüe des enjeux de pouvoir dans la distribution des savoirs. Il échappe au piège de la sentimentalité victimaire trop souvent en jeu dans le rameau postcolonial de la pensée critique. Au contraire, il sait utiliser ces richesses théoriques pour questionner leur utilisation dans le monde chinois et leur détournement systématique au service d'un discours nationaliste renouvelé et inquiétant.
