Voice assistants are used to answer simple questions from the user. There is no exchange of data between different integrations to answer complex questions. Using Linked Open Data can enable to share knowledge between these different datasets and get answers to complex questions. This thesis will investigate if a constrained device can be used to generate Linked Data from the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) and provide an answer to a complex journey using multiple public transport agencies. Since GTFS data is not published as Linked Data, a pipeline must be created to transform the heterogeneous data from its original source to Linked Data. There are two methods to accomplish this: materialization and virtualization. Materialization creates a copy of the data in the Linked Data format, where virtualization translates the posed query to the heterogeneous data format and translates the response back into Linked Data. Virtualization does not require a full copy of the dataset. However, materialization supports a broader range of heterogeneous data formats, and will be used for this research. The size of the GTFS data and the available tools to generate the Linked Data showed that the constrained device does not have the resources to convert the GTFS data. The work is divided so that a separate device with more resources, a server or computer with better resources, is in charge of transforming the GTFS data. The GTFS-RT data is realtime data that contains the details of any delays or cancellations. This data is smaller than the full GTFS data, therefor more suitable for the constrained device to process and update the GTFS data on the server. Another bottleneck we encountered was composing queries to retrieve the information about the different transfers on the journey. Using separate queries for each part gives fast results, whereas combining them into a single query significantly prolongs the processing time. Based on the total time required to generate the Linked Data from GTFS data on a separate computer and generating the realtime updates with a constrained device, we can conclude that this approach cannot compete with the response time of traditional voice assistants. Our process would lead to triggering the timeout on the voice assistant, indicating that the request exceeds the acceptable processing duration.
