La révolution scientifique qui a transformé l'Europe ne s'est pas produite en Chine bien que beaucoup d'inventions y aient été faites. C'est pourquoi on a souvent pensé qu'il y avait une dimension incompatible dans la culture chinoise qui ne s'accordait pas avec cette nouvelle logique. Cette conception a été de plus en plus remise en question par un bon nombre de chercheurs pour lesquels il existe une longue tradition de pratique scientifique en Chine. Il est à noter, selon cette perspective, qu'il ne faudrait pas identifier la notion de science à sa version européenne. La science est plurielle. La Chine a construit un savoir épistémologique qu'il faut découvrir. Dans ce livre, nous avons discuté de l'ensemble de cette problématique à partir d'une lecture vive des sources chinoises. Nous avons tenté de montrer tout l'enjeu de cette relecture pour une meilleure compréhension de la Chine contemporaine.

Deals with modern theory of functional equations in several variables and their applications to mathematics, information theory, and the natural, behavioral, and social sciences. The authors emphasize applications, although not at the expense of theory, and have kept the prerequisites to a minimum; the reader should be familiar with calculus and some simple structures of algebra and have a basic knowledge of Lebesque integration. For the applications the authors have included references and explained the results used. The book is designed so that the chapters may be read almost independently of each other, enabling a selection of material to be chosen for introductory and advanced courses. Each chapter concludes with exercises and further results, 400 in all, which extend and test the material presented in the text. The history of functional equations is well documented in a final chapter which is complemented by an encyclopedic bibliography of over 1600 items. This volume will be of interest to professionals and graduate students in pure and applied mathematics.

Il survient parfois un moment de l’histoire où les scientifiques, tous domaines confondus, s’imposent dans un même mouvement de faire le point des connaissances acquises et de tracer les routes à suivre. C’est à un tel moment que nous convient les leçons de l’an III, professées sous la Convention au premier semestre de 1795 devant plus d’un millier d’auditeurs, retranscrites par le soin de sténographes et aussitôt publiées. Ce volume réunit les cours qui furent prononcés en lettres au sens large du terme : réflexions de GARAT sur les mécanismes de l’entendement, remarques de l’abbé SICARD sur le langage, cours d’histoire littéraire de LA HARPE et notes de BERNARDIN DE SAINT-PIERRE sur la morale, en parties inédites.
