The goal of this PhD is to retrace the discursive mechanisms that structure the archive of travel accounts written in French about Central Africa. Based on questions raised by Elizabeth Ezra ( The Colonial Unconscious ) and Homi K. Bhabha ( The Location of culture ), it tries to demonstrate the structural hybridity of colonial travel discourse. Not on the basis of a psychoanalytical framework as done by Ezra and Bhabha, nor on the mapping of an africanist discourse, as done by Christopher Miller ( Blank Darknes ), but on the basis of a thorough analysis of the mise en scène (“scénographie”) of the narrative roles and also a mapping of the spatio-temporal dimensions. It shows a remarkable evolution of the narrative subject (from a romantic hero to a disillusioned ego, with in between the polymorphous, collective narrator of high colonialism). It also shows a dispersion of the temporal frameworks (with interaction and tension between present, past and future) and the spatial representations, which lead to Africas instead of Africa . The picture these colonial travel narratives paint is that of a polymorphous Africa, which permits to question an “ orientalist” approach of this archive.
