Abstract

Victor Bourgeois (1897-1962) was the leading pioneer of the international Moderne Beweging (modernist movement) in Belgium. He was invited to design a house for the famous Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart in 1927, and between 1928 and 1930 he played an important role in the CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne), the most influential platform for modern architecture and urban design of the twentieth century. This book is the first study of Bourgeois' built and textual oeuvre. Despite the refinement of his designs and acuteness of his theoretical insights, he was unjustly forgotten as an architect and urban designer. Architectural historian and curator Iwan Strauven has charted Victor Bourgeois' complete oeuvre, as well as an intellectual biography. This comprehensive monograph is an important contribution to understanding the history of twentieth-century architecture.

Abstract

"Virtuous situations from the industrial past and some ideas for the 'climatic metropolis' to come (the cases of Brussels and Paris)" compiles examples and projections that question the shape given to the city and territory at a moment of paradigm shift. The rapid evolution of climate change is leading to a clear state of emergency that is going to redefine the values and forms of our society and its territories. Several signs of a gradual paradigm shift have appeared and citizen voices are being raised against a social model that is at odds with the environment. Looking towards the past, a fascinated reading of a city's ability to transform itself radically when necessary, is proposed. The change, generated by the race towards industrialization and social emancipation, forced metropolises such as Brussels and Paris to develop new urban functions and logics. This evolution took shape in territories that were not yet highly urbanized, but also within the city itself, in negotiation with the existing context. A series of 23 situations from the industrial age draws a panorama of virtuous examples, illustrating an assumed cohabitation between the urban fabric and the infrastructural, productive and energy needs at a precise moment of radical change in Paris and Brussels. The development of the "climatic metropolis" must imperatively be based on design values and principles capable of generating a common vision. In this perspective, we propose some ideas for reflection formalized by projects tied to the built stories from the past, outlining potential situations of a new state to come for the European city--From the introduction.

Abstract

During the pandemic, 45 people were invited to take part in a "serious game": each participant selected the image of a personal object of fascination, out of which a shape was extracted, redrawn, scaled and sent to a CNC machine to be cut out of a 5 mm thick aluminium sheet and become a low table. Each table is here presented through the original image that generated it, the selected contour, a text by its author and photographs of the prototype taken by Maxime Delvaux and printed in silver. Objects of Fascination explores digital technology and craftsmanship through found forms. It can be seen as a collection of personal worldviews by an emerging generation of architects, as much as an attempt to give a physical form to the multiplicity of our collective cultural background. Published in collaboration with Architecture Curating Practice.

Abstract

Brussels housing is extremely diverse, as anyone walking around the city will readily appreciate. Its traditional urban block consists of single-family terraced houses, usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the rear. Here, this bourgeois housing type evolved into a particularly broad range - including the well-known Art Nouveau residences - and still forms the "DNA" of the city. Today, many other housing forms have emerged there; thus, Brussels' residential building types comprise narrow gabled-roofed houses standing side by side with modernist appartment buildings, 19th-century mansions, and brand new condominiums. This typical Belgian layering of housing solutions makes for a visually poetic chaos, creating at times a surreal scenery but also providing answers for the challenges of housing design. The three chapters of this publication explore Brussels' housing typologies from the origins to the present day. More than 100 selected case studies are documented with scaled drawings and photographs. The works by photographer Maxime Delvaux trace a promenade comprising an expressive journey through the Belgian capital and its varied cityscapes. The book offers a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and urban development of Brussels.

Abstract

Modern urban terraced houses or row houses emerged in Europe from the 17th century onwards. Usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the back, they formed the traditional urban block. In Brussels, this bourgeois form of housing took on a particularly varied and inspiring form – including the well-known Art Nouveau residences – and forms the DNA of the city to this day. This publication analyses 100 selected examples illustrating the emergence of the terraced house and its further development in other forms of housing. The result is a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and development of the city of Brussels with its particularly heterogenous cityscape. Städtische Reihenhäuser – town houses – entstanden in Europa ab dem 17. Jahrhundert.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Architects’ Journeys is a collection of monographs on architects who left their mark on the built landscape of Brussels after the First World War. The collection focuses on the output of architects whose work is less well known, but their intimate relationships with the city make this survey all the more worthwhile. Each volume highlights a singular career path, both factually and figuratively, revealing the built heritage as well as the little-known and little-studied facets of the capital’s urban history. The first volume in this series follows the career of Stanislas Jasinski (1901–1978), from the 1920s to 1970. He authored numerous projects, mostly in the Brussels region. Largely preserved and in the public realm, his work reinterprets the theme of the flat block as a typology of the evolution of the city. In addition to his architectural projects, Jasinski wrote many essential articles and texts, testifying to his constant commitment, throughout his career, to the debate on architecture and urban planning. Stanislas Jasinski’s work is definitely worth discovering and appreciating.
