Abstract

Over the last two decades the innovation performance of the European Union has been rather sluggish. Because of this and connected to an increasing awareness around the subject of data protection, the European Commission has introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which will be implemented by the 25th of May. The GDPR aims at harmonizing the rules regarding the protection of data amongst the member states, and must foster a new wave of innovation in the EU business landscape. This thesis will assess the differences in attitudes that exist towards regulation when discussing different member states, business sectors and firm size. Finally a therefore dedicated section will go deeper in on the effect that the implementation of the GDPR might have on innovation incentives. Overall, if companies can overcome the compliance costs connected to the new regulation framework, the GDPR might act as an enabler more than a barrier to innovation. But the differences that exist among member states can lead to differences of the impact of the GDPR.
