This volume investigates the development of the scientific and scholarly discipline that deals with the history and the civilization of the Etruscans as an independent field of research: Etruscology. Although the Etruscans are known as the oldest population/ethnic group in Italy and one of the eldest civilizations of Europe, their history has not been subjected to scientific work until the early 20th century. The Etruscans were often considered inferior to both Greeks and Romans and, therefore, overshadowed by them. The proceedings of this first conference on the history and development of Etruscology in the 20th focuses on how the discipline acquired autonomy, self-recognition and influence through the establishment of a prestigious journal, international conferences, and university research chairs. Consequently, Etruscan history became not only part of a national history, but also an international science.
