The aim of this project is to investigate the value of the added TOF information in PET measurements for attenuation correction without transmission scan, and to improve the problem of attenuation correction of PET emission data. To this end, we have demonstrated that attenuation correction is possible provided that the TOF resolution of the system is less than the extent of the phantom/patient in the scanner. However, an additional scale correction technique is required for a quantitative accuracy of the tracer distribution. We have proposed several methods which differently use the added TOF information, that could be used in different settings. Also, in the case of gated TOF - PET data, we have proposed a fully 4D method that in addition to solving the longstanding attenuation problem makes use of the emission data from all frames.
