Abstract

Atlas of Implantable Therapies for Pain Management This atlas is an essential guide for all implanters, from beginners to the most advanced practitioners. The process of implanting and managing spinal cord stimulators, peripheral nerve stimulators, and intrathecal pumps, from the beginning through long-term management, is thoroughly discussed, as are the prevention and management of complications. Extensive photographs and detailed instructions make each segment a great learning event. The Atlas of Implantable Therapies for Pain Management is a “must-have” resource for any physician wishing to improve his or her skills in interventional pain treatment. ABOUT THE AUTHOR TIMOTHY DEER, MD, is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Pain Relief in Charleston, West Virginia and Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown. Dr. Deer is the immediate past Chair of the Committee on Pain Medicine for the American Society of Anesthesiologists; a member of the Boards of Directors of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians; and a member of the Board of Directors and The Executive Board of the International Neuromodulation Society. He is also Chairman of the Scientific Review Committee of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, Chairman of the Scientific Oversight Committee for Pain Medicine of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the current President of The West Virginia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. He lectures widely on the topic of implantable therapies in pain management and is one of the most respected proponents of these therapies worldwide.

Abstract

Edited by Sudhir Diwan, a former Director of Pain Medicine fellowship program at Ivy League Weill Cornell Medical College, and Timothy R. Deer, an internationally renowned expert in neuromodulation and minimally invasive spinal procedures, this atlas covers advanced procedures that normal residency and fellowship programs may not cover. It consolidates information pain fellows usually amass by traveling throughout the country to various specialized weekend courses. Advanced Procedures for Interventional Pain Management: A Step-by-Step Atlas is for physicians that know the fundamentals of pain medicine and want to push their knowledge further. Through easy-to-digest bullet points, extensive diagrams, hundreds of figures, and expanded legends beneath each illustration, this compendium covers techniques such as fluoroscopic guidance and radiation safety, endoscopic transforaminal discectomy, endoscopic direct-percutaneous discectomy, transforaminal myelogram, percutaneous facet fusion, percutaneous sacroplasty, vertebral augmentations, percutaneous tumor ablation, percutaneous spinal fusion, minimally invasive spinal decompression (MILD), Interspinous Spacer Placement and advanced neuroaugmentation techniques like high frequency stimulation and DRG stimulation. This book also has a dedicated section on Regenerative Medicine with chapters on platelet rich plasma, stem cell therapy, and intradiscal regenerative therapy. Each chapter has a strict chapter format that includes the indications and contraindications for each procedure, a list of equipment and drugs, a step-by-step illustration-focused how-to, a list of possible post-procedural complications, and bullet-pointed clinical pearls and pitfalls. Within each chapter the authors will also cover the variations of each procedure due to different equipment. This book is ideal for pain medicine fellows, spine surgeons, and interventional pain physicians who want access to the best minds and specialized procedures in a single package.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive review of the development of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of chronic pain. The book consists of three sections; it begins with the foundations of RFA by examining its history, development, mechanisms of action, and types. The second section explores various indications for RFA, including cervical pain, spinal metastasis, vertebral body, and hip joint pain. The final section then discusses the utilization of peripheral nerve ablation. The book concludes with future indications and forward-looking options for these therapies. Essentials of Radiofrequency Ablation of the Spine and Joints is a forward-looking resource that recognizes the expanding field of RFA indications and new tools for ablation.

Abstract

From reviews of the First Edition: “For the practitioner new to the field of implantable therapies, this book shows the scope of this particular branch of pain medicine. It is full of good advice on techniques and how to avoid complications." British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology "All practicing pain physicians, whether their background is in anesthesia or neurosurgery, will find [this atlas] very useful…beautifully written and well-illustrated with x-ray images and pictures…a must-read for every pain fellow and a very useful one for every pain physician." Doody’s Review Service Now in its Second Edition, this atlas remains an essential guide to the treatment of pain using neuromodulation and is written for all implanters, from beginners to the most advanced practitioners.  It has been significantly expanded with many brand new chapters and figures and thoroughly updated to address new techniques, targets, waveforms, and concepts that have emerged since publication of the last edition and now provides even more detailed coverage of patient safety, including infection control and reduction of bleeding risks. The new and returning physicians who have collaborated on the Second Edition are world-class in their research, clinical expertise, and ethics of practice.   They have endeavored to make each segment of the atlas a great learning event through careful integration of extensive photographs, illustrations, and detailed instructions and to create a resource that helps to improve practice and enhance outcomes while complementing fellowship training, peer-to-peer experiences, and hands-on continuing medical education.   .
