Abstract

The traceability in the food sector has become increasingly important. Traceability systems are used to determine the on-going location of products and to trace products back to their origin and used production methods. Such systems are indispensable to provide transparency and security to consumers. To achieve this, an efficient traceability system must therefore provide current information about the food supply chain items in real time. This is possible by building digital traceability systems. In this paper, the use of a graph database is proposed to facilitate and improve the performance of traceability requests. This system is presented by detailing the different aspects taken into account during its design. Particular efforts have been made to establish a maintainable and easy to evolve system. This new solution is finally compared to a naive system relying on a classical relational database. Overall, utilizing a graph database proved to simplify the food traceability analysis and offers better query response times.

Abstract

Decision-making is part of everyday life. In theory, making a decision consists in assessing all the choices, their outcomes, and sometimes their probability of occurrence and then making the best choice according to the decision maker's preferences. For instance, should employees commute by bus or by car? If they take the bus, they will depend on the location of the bus stop and bus schedule and may arrive late at work if the bus is delayed. However, this option is more environmentally friendly. On the other side, the car offers more flexibility but is less environmentally friendly. According to whether they are concerned with the environment or flexibility, they will prefer one option to the other. However, in reality, decision-making is more complex. Indeed, making choices in the real world implies considering uncertainties during the decision process. In addition, more than one person is involved in the decision-making process which makes the final decision more complicated to make as each person has different preferences. Companies such as Safran Aero Boosters (SAB), an engineering company specialising in aerospace parts such as boosters, are affected by the latter type of decision-making process. This thesis identifies and models the decision-making problem within research and development in the (new) technologies department of the SAB company. To model this problem, a decision support tool, called Crystal Ball Decision Tool is proposed. Developed in Microsoft Excel and with the Palisade DecisionSuite Tools add-ins, Crystal Ball Decision Tool makes use of Monte Carlo simulation to handle uncertainties and Multi-Criteria Decision-Making methods to satisfy the different person's preferences within the decision-making process. This tool can support SAB employees in their decision-making by analysing technologies and comparing several technologies/projects, among which prioritisation must be made. In addition, Crystal Ball Decision Too allows centralising the decision-making process in one single tool. The decision support tool's abilities to analyse and compare technologies are then tested on three real SAB projects. Although improvements can be made to this very first version of the tool within the SAB company, the results are encouraging and show that the Crystal Ball Decision Tool fulfils its duty to assist in decision-making.

Abstract

Today the use of drones is widely spread for many tasks, but for some of these, such as firefighting, it is vital that the operator’s hands are kept free to do their jobproperly. Hopefully speech recognition is an exploding discipline in deep learning. Thiswork therefore focuses on finding a deep learning model that recognises spoken com-mands to control a drone from a pre-defined set.The first part of the work was to build a training dataset of commands with thecombination of complete commands generated through the use of text-to-speech APIsand hand-crafted commands. These were created thanks to the concatenation of anopen source spoken words dataset and another set of spoken words acquired through aweb platform created in order to complete the missing words of the vocabulary com-mand set. The testing set was acquired by asking people to record complete commandsunder real conditions. The second part of the work focuses more on the different models that could bedeveloped and all the techniques that can be used. These are presented as an ablationstudy, in order to improve the results on a test set in real conditions. Several meth-ods were applied in order to achieve the final goal: the first is the use of computervision models where the input of these models is a simple spectrogram of the differentcommands. The results using these types of models were not as good as those of thenew models which take directly the raw waveform as input and combines vision, atten-tion and self-supervised learning. The best version of this model obtains a F1-Score of0.9973 on a real conditions dataset.

Abstract

In Belgium, the global warming offers new opportunities for the wine culture. In the past fifteen years, the area dedicated for vineyards became eight times bigger, rising from 72 hectares in 2006 to 587 hectares in 2020.Nevertheless, the Belgian climate is not always indulgent with vineyards throughout the year. In the spring particularly, when the bud has already grew and became more sensitive to frost, a few cold nights may arise and lead to the destruction of the grapes.Hopefully, few methods exist to fight bud freezing. From one vineyard to another, different techniques will be used depending on, amongst other, the size of the plantation, the intensity of the frost or the financial means. In 2017, half of the plantations have a size below one hectare. For this kind of small area, the construction of expensive infrastructures is not viable and more adapted methods must be chosen. The most suitable solution, and often the only one conceivable in small vineyards, consists in lightning large candles all over the place to increase the temperature around the grapes.Although this solution has the advantages to be simple and relatively cheap, it also has two drawbacks. The first one, common to other more expensive methods, is the temperature monitoring, which consist in determining when to take action. The second one, inherent to this particular method, is the need of a workforce available in a hurry to light all the candles in the middle of the night. In our work, we propose to assist Belgian wine makers by means of acrfull{ml} techniques in the two aspects aforementioned. We achieved to accurately forecast the temperatures around the grapes up to 36 hours ahead with an error below 1 degree Celsius. Additionally, we also provide a live supervising model capable of detecting negative temperatures with an error below 0.5 degree. In doing so, we avoid the wine growers to unnecessarily wake up during night to monitor the temperatures and we also allow them to organize a workforce sufficiently early enough.

Abstract

This work describes the development of a vector drawing application for the TikZ language with shape recognition features. Shape recognition refers to granting users the ability to draw freely on the application canvas and have their drawings automatically formalised by the algorithm.
