Development aid concerns a matter of life and death for a considerable proportion of the global population. Realising this, many -if not all- governments from developed countries have made it their business to engage in development aid efforts. Of course, one of the core principles of democracy dictates that such action is only legitimate when supported by their respective populations. Therefore, researching public attitudes with regard to development aid constitutes a vital cornerstone of development aid studies. This dissertation was drafted on the basis of this realisation. Firstly, I will investigate students general stance towards development aid and determine whether the determinants that have been identified for the general population also explain the diverging development aid support levels of students. Secondly, this thesis will explore what role and salience students assign to development aid in the context of the economic crisis, Belgium s socio-political difficulties, the war on terror and historical alliances. Finally, this dissertation will gauge if students appreciate the economic and political conditionality of development aid as much as Western governments and (their) international institutions. By means of a quantitative analysis, featuring linear regression models, I was able to establish that students, and especially female and left-wing voters, are more supportive of development aid than the general Belgian population. Furthermore, the results of my research suggest that the effects of the econonomic and socio-political difficulties of the past decade on students attitudes should not be underestimated. Finally, this dissertation shows that students do not legitimize favouring former colonies when distributing development aid. Additionally, it seems that they have reservations towards the principle of aid conditionality.
