This volume contains essays on the samples of twenty-six of the languages of Inner Eurasia. The samples were originally collected by Nicolaas Witsen (1641-1717) and published by him in 1705.00For thirty years this Dutch diplomat, scholar and Mayor of Amsterdam gathered information about the physical features, the flora, the fauna and the peoples of the northern and eastern parts of Inner Eurasia. His classic and pioneering work ?Noord en Oost Tartarye? (North and East Tartary) also included a number of glossaries, translations of the Lord?s Prayer, and examples of writing systems which provide unique infomation about Caucasic, Samoyedic, Finno-Ugric, Mongolic, Turkic, Tungustic and some other languages.00The articles in this book were written by a group of internationally renowned specialists in their respective fields and give detailed analyses of the materials in Witsen?s great work. This substantially enhances our knowledge of linguistic studies in the 17th century and furthers out understanding of the earlier stages of a fairly considerable number of the languages spoken in the vast expanse of the Eurasian landmass.
