Abstract

Infrared reflection photography is presented in literature as a possible localisation test for blood on dark materials. Blood is a substance that absorbs infrared light, while black coloured fabrics would reflect infrared resulting in a contrast enhancement. The main goal was too implement this localisation method via a standard operating procedure that can be used for crime investigation. A primary standard operating procedure was set up by early localisation and visualisation experiments, emphasizing the importance for the position of the camera and light exposure. The validation was performed based on ENFSI guidelines testing the standard operating procedure for precision, false negative rate, measurement range and robustness. A blind experiment resulted for a precision of 81.51% and false negative rate of 23.06%. Robustness experiments resulted in differences in bloodstain detection based on fabric composition, whilst colour did not influence IR detection much. Aging of blood did not influence the detection limit, but no bloodstains could be detected after a washing procedure. A ratio threshold of 1 was tested differentiating between visible vs. invisible bloodstains under IR, based on bloodstain intensities over background intensities. Visible bloodstain ratios were significantly (p<0.05) below, while invisible bloodstain ratios were significantly different from the threshold. The technique was already useful for the documentation of bloodstains on black coloured clothing during a real crime investigation. In conclusion the technique can attribute to the expansion of the investigative repertoire for crime investigation.
