The present volume contains a collection of papers on the reception of Aristotle''s Problemata, a multifaceted text asking various questions about medical, scientific or everyday topics. This text is one of the most neglected Aristotelian treatises, because of its heterogeneous character and its so-called ''inauthenticity''. It has been the subject of a complex transmission. In ancient times, Aristotle''s text has been augmented and adapted, while still other authors composed similar collections of Problemata. In the Middle Ages, Problemata collections have been translated into Arabic, Latin,

This book brings together views from various disciplines on the concept of authority in Greek and Latin literature from Antiquity to the Renaissance. More specifically it deals with the questions how texts attempt to gain authority, and if and how they use - or abuse - earlier writings in the construction of their own authority. Moreover, this volume examines to what extent a text’s authoritative claims influence its transmission and reception and how these claims themselves are subject to evolution over time. In this context, special attention is devoted to compilation literature (such as anthologies and commonplace books), which is characterized by extensive use of existing source material and thus specifically poses the problem of the role played by compilers in transmitting and establishing authority. The volume contains 15 articles in which the contributors discuss various cases and texts that illustrate the different factors at stake in dealing with and constructing authority.

An important chapter in the rediscovery of Aristotle in the Middle Ages is the oeuvre of Bartholomew of Messina (Bartholomaeus de Messana), a translator at the court of Manfred, King of Sicily (1258– 1266). However, the impact of both Bartholomew and Manfred on the cultural and intellectual life of their time remains understudied, especially in comparison to the attention received by the translator's contemporary, William of Moerbeke, and by the King's father, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. This volume contributes to the exploration of this field of research in a twofold way. It discusses the nature and importance of Bartholomew's oeuvre (and especially his translations of Aristotle). Moreover, by situating Bartholomew's activity in a broader context this book pays special attention to cultural life under the reign of Manfred.

This volume explores the methodological challenges associated with the editing of commentaries on authoritative texts. The manifold commentaries on the authoritative texts of Antiquity and the Middle Ages are increasingly being recognized as witnesses to a rich tradition of cultural reception and intellectual engagement. This renewed interest goes hand-in-hand with an increased demand for critical editions of the texts in question. However, the genre of the commentary presents a number of specific, sometimes unique challenges to the editor. An ancient or medieval text that comments on another one is inevitably shaped by it. The commentary can cite the commented work or copy its structure and regularly the two are presented together on the page, leading to complex relations between the texts and the manner of their presentation. Modern scholarship on the authoritative text that is commented on will often find it useful to consider the commentary. Vice versa, the editor of the commentary cannot turn a blind eye to the text commented on. Especially in the case of authoritative texts, both the commented text and the commentary usually have a complex transmission history. This volume explores the methodological challenges associated with the editing of commentaries on authoritative texts and shows their potential for the textual constitution of the latter ones. Bringing together twelve case studies spanning Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, on texts written in Greek and Latin from a variety of fields, including literature, theology, philosophy, medicine, and law, the volume offers a broad, interdisciplinary perspective on commentaries on authoritative texts and the editors work to accurately reconstruct and present them

The commentary of the Italian physician and philosopher Pietro d'Abano on Bartholomew of Messina's Latin translation of Pseudo-Aristotle's 'Problemata Physica', published in 1310, constitutes an important historical source. In a section of the corpus Aristotelicum that was not part of the standard curriculum at the medieval university, the commentary of Pietro d'Abano investigates the complex relationship between text, translation, and commentary. The eight articles in this volume provide valuable insights into the manner in which Pietro d'Abano deals with the problems of a translated text. They emphasize the idiosyncrasy of his approach in comparison to his contemporaries and successors, the particularities of his commentary in light of the habitual exegetical practices applied in the teaching of curricular texts, as well as the influence of philosophical traditions outside the strict framework of the medieval arts faculty.

The commentary of Pietro d'Abano on Bartholomew's Latin transation of Pseudo-Aristotle's "Problemata Physica, published in 1310, constitues an important historical source for the investigation of the complex relationship between text, translation, and commentary in a non-curricular part of the "corpus Aristotelicum". As the eights articles in this volume show, the study of Pietro's commentary not only provides valuable insights into the manner in which a commentator deals with the problems of a translated text, but will also bring to light the idiosyncrasy of Pietro's approach in comparison to his contemporaries and successors, the particularities of his commentary in light of the habitual exegetical practices applied in the teaching of regular texts, as well as the influence of philosophical traditions outside the strict framework of the medieval arts faculty.
