A Londres en 1956, Sir Laurence Olivier se prépare à réaliser un film. Le jeune Colin Clark, enthousiaste étudiant de cinéma, veut être impliqué et manœuvre pour obtenir un emploi: il parvient à être embauché comme troisième assistant réalisateur sur le plateau du film. Il est ainsi témoin des relations entre l'acteur-réalisateur et son actrice-productrice Marilyn Monroe durant le tournage du "Prince et la Danseuse". Lorsque Marilyn Monroe arrive en Angleterre pour le début du tournage, la ville de Londres est en effervescence à l'idée de recevoir une telle star. Commence alors une opposition entre un réalisateur de plus en plus dur et une comédienne surmédiatisée, qu'un mariage récent avec l'intellectuel Arthur Miller et que des doutes incessants fragilisent. Intrigué par Marilyn Monroe avant même de la connaître, Colin Clark est progressivement invité par la jeune femme à entrer dans son monde intérieur, où elle lui dévoile ses luttes intimes, ainsi que ses craintes relatives à sa célébrité, à sa beauté et à son désir d'être une grande actrice.

Lorsqu'il fait la connaissance de Maria Altmann, un jeune avocat de Los Angeles est loin de se douter de ce qui l'attend... Cette septuagénaire excentrique lui confie une mission des plus sidérantes : l'aider à récupérer l'un des plus célèbres tableaux de Gustav Klimt, exposé dans le plus grand musée d'Autriche, dont elle assure que celui-ci appartenait à sa famille ! D'abord sceptique, le jeune avocat se laisse convaincre par cette attachante vieille dame tandis que celle-ci lui raconte sa jeunesse tourmentée, l'invasion nazi, la spoliation des tableaux de sa famille, jusqu'à sa fuite aux Etats-Unis. Mais l'Autriche n'entend évidemment pas rendre la « Joconde autrichienne » à sa propriétaire légitime... Faute de recours, ils décident d'intenter un procès au gouvernement autrichien pour faire valoir leur droit et prendre une revanche sur l'Histoire.
