Abstract

Since its establishment in Hong Kong in 1998,the international Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning (IDEAL) conference has become a r- erence for researchers in both theoretical and practical aspects of learning and information processing, data mining, retrieval and management, bioinformatics and bio-inspired models, agents and hybrid systems and ?nancial engineering. The purpose of IDEAL conferences has been to provide a broad and interd- ciplinary forum for scientists, researchers, and practitioners in these areas from around the world. A special feature of IDEAL conferences is cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas in emerging topics and application in these areas. Data ana- sis and engineering and associated learning paradigms are playing increasingly important roles in an increasing number of applications and ?elds. The mul- disciplinary nature of contemporary research is pushing the boundaries and one of the principal aims of the IDEAL conferences is to promote interactions and collaborations across disciplines. This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains accepted - pers presented at IDEAL 2006 held at the University of Burgos, Spain, during, September 20–23, 2006. The conference received 557 submissions from over 40 countriesaroundtheworld, whichweresubsequentlyrefereedbytheProgramme Committeeandmanyadditionalreviewers.Afterrigorousreview,170top-quality papers were accepted and included in the proceedings. The acceptance rate was only 30%, which ensured an extremely high-quality standard of the conference. The buoyant number of submitted papers is a clear proof of the vitality and increased importance of the ?elds related to IDEAL, and is also an indication of the rising popularity of the IDEAL conferences.

Abstract

This monograph comprises work on network-based Intrusion Detection (ID) that is grounded in visualisation and hybrid Artificial Intelligence (AI). It has led to the design of MOVICAB-IDS (MObile VIsualisation Connectionist Agent-Based IDS), a novel Intrusion Detection System (IDS), which is comprehensively described in this book. This novel IDS combines different AI paradigms to visualise network traffic for ID at packet level. It is based on a dynamic Multiagent System (MAS), which integrates an unsupervised neural projection model and the Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) paradigm through the use of deliberative agents that are capable of learning and evolving with the environment. The proposed novel hybrid IDS provides security personnel with a synthetic, intuitive snapshot of network traffic and protocol interactions. This visualisation interface supports the straightforward detection of anomalous situations and their subsequent identification. The performance of MOVICAB-IDS was tested through a novel mutation-based testing method in different real domains which entailed several attacks and anomalous situations.

Abstract

The application of a “committee of experts” or ensemble learning to artificial neural networks that apply unsupervised learning techniques is widely considered to enhance the effectiveness of such networks greatly. This book examines the potential of the ensemble meta-algorithm by describing and testing a technique based on the combination of ensembles and statistical PCA that is able to determine the presence of outliers in high-dimensional data sets and to minimize outlier effects in the final results. Its central contribution concerns an algorithm for the ensemble fusion of topology-preserving maps, referred to as Weighted Voting Superposition (WeVoS), which has been devised to improve data exploration by 2-D visualization over multi-dimensional data sets. This generic algorithm is applied in combination with several other models taken from the family of topology preserving maps, such as the SOM, ViSOM, SIM and Max-SIM. A range of quality measures for topologypreserving maps that are proposed in the literature are used to validate and compare WeVoS with other algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that, in the majority of cases, the WeVoS algorithm outperforms earlier map-fusion methods and the simpler versions of the algorithm with which it is compared. All the algorithms are tested in different artificial data sets and in several of the most common machine-learning data sets in order to corroborate their theoretical properties. Moreover, a real-life case-study taken from the food industry demonstrates the practical benefits of their application to more complex problems.
