BEA – a Belgian company – is a worldwide reference for detection solutions for automatic doors. The company designs, develops and markets its sensors. Today, the company is still growing through its presence on new key markets. This master thesis analyses the market potential of loading docks security. BEA wishes to use its experience to consider the use of detectors in the loading dock environment. The market study was carried out using a qualitative approach: After the global diagnosis of the environment and trends on the loading dock market, this thesis describes the sector and the different types of market players. Thanks to an introspective view of the company, it was also possible to highlight BEA's strengths and weaknesses in relation to the market. In addition, a description of the loading docks and their use was made to highlight the risks and needs of the market. Consequently, the value propositions for the main types of actors in the sector are discussed. The master thesis then describes the targeting and positioning proposed for this specific market. The last point focuses on the results in relation to the market potential analysed and the author's recommendations for BEA.

Customer satisfaction has become a norm: product quality, on-time delivery and competitive prices are prerequisites for long-term business relationships. The projects exposed in this thesis aim to advance the issue of non-compliance with deadlines identified in an aeronautical company, Britte-Mustad, by improving its production processes through the DMAIC methodology. The first project intends to improve the transmission of information on the arrival of workpieces in the various sectors of the workshop. The suggested solution to achieve this goal is the implementation of a table inspired by the Kanban method of the Lean production system. This thesis studies the implementation as well as the problems encountered such as resistance and change management as well as how to deal with them. The second project aims to improve the protection and identification of workpieces in order to reduce the risk of alteration during the manufacturing process. The considered solution consists in the acquisition of new packaging for the internal transport of workpieces. This thesis presents a comparative study of the solutions proposed by suppliers and describes the steps followed to lead to decision-making. For the company, both studies must be the beginning of a series of projects following the same approach to achieve concrete results.

Workload and schedule management is a major concern for companies that have based their income system on project development, namely Project-Based Organizations (PBO). A better control of project schedules and (human) resources leads to a better control of costs and margin: every delay in a project incurs additional costs in penalties and/or overspendings. The Belgian entity of John Cockerill Industry Metals (JCM) is one of these PBO whose core business is based on the design and the erection of cold rolling mills and strip processing lines. This activity takes the form of multiple projects for different clients. The objective of this study is to improve the management of the workload required to carry-out ongoing and potential new projects, by proposing a solution that gives a better vision of the resources needed over the duration of each project. An initial analysis of the procedures and operations within John Cockerill Industry Metals was performed. This analysis was based on the study of a specific project involving a technology of strategic interest for the entity in the field of galvanizing lines; it revealed possible improvements in time evaluation and project monitoring procedures. The proposed solution is based on the theory of the Work Breakdow System (WBS), combined with a tool to assess the duration of each WBS activity and the overall project duration using improved PERT formulas and Monte-Carlo simulation. This solution should allow a better evaluation of project duration and thus a more accurate assessment of the total project workload and resources. Planning a project is however not sufficient: any project involves risks which materialise in the occurrence of events that disrupt its progress. It is therefore important to early identify deviations and to evaluate their potential consequences in order to react properly. To address this issue, the Earned Value Management, a highly effective monitoring method has been introduced.

The company Eloy Water is located in Sprimont (Belgium). It is active in the field of waste water treatment and rainwater recovery for individuals and communities. The enterprise commercializes two types of waste water stations. Each of them can be made of concrete or plastic. The concrete tanks are manufactured at Eloy Water whereas the production of plastic tanks is subcontracted. Eloy Water’s goal for the next years is to completely internalize the production of plastic tanks. The company also wants to integrate a small part of recycled plastic in the manufacturing of its plastic tanks as well as in the manufacturing of its purifying elements that we can find in both types of tanks. On the one hand, this master’s thesis is focusing on the integration of recycled plastic in the products manufactured by injection moulding. This results in the study of the injection moulding process as well as in trials made on the Oxybee®, a purifying element, with different recycled plastics. On the other hand, it also looks into the possibility of integrating recycled plastic in the tanks manufactured by rotational moulding. This second aspect is taken into account in a study of the rotational moulding process and the different techniques which may be implemented to integrate recycled plastic. A last part of the master’s thesis is devoted to the reasons that pushed Eloy Water to internalize the production of the plastic tanks.

Venous malformations (VMs) are localized defects that arise during the development of the vascular system. The vast majority of VMs are sporadic. 50% of sporadic VMs are caused by somatic mutations in the gene TEK, which codes for the endothelial cell tyrosine kinase receptor TIE2. The most common mutation identified in patients is a leucine-to-phenylalanine substitution at position 914 (L914F). Nonsense mutations that cause premature truncation on the inhibitory C-terminal tail domain of TIE2 have also been identified. RI 099X is the most common, as well as the most proximal, of these truncating mutations. All VM-causative mutations induce ligand-independent phosphorylation of TIE2, of varying strengths. In the case of L914F, this causes chronic AKT and STATl activation, linked to disease pathogenesis. We wished to assess whether RI 099X works through the same molecular pathways as L914F despite lacking three phosphorylable tyrosines, previously implicated in their activation. We find that R1099X, like L914F, does indeed affect AKT and STATl activation when overexpressed in vitro. We investigated whether the C-terminal tail and its tyrosines, shown to be important in signaling by wild-type TIE2 upon Angptl ligand-binding , also participates in L914F-signaling. We find that lack of the C-terminal tail affects the wild-type and L914F forms of TIE2 differently, suggesting important differences in their structure. In addition, we find evidence for complex regulation of STATl and AKT by TIE2, with a balance between activation and inhibition of these molecules depending on different C-terminal tail tyrosines.
