Abstract

The world of materials hosts an extraordinarily diverse wealth of architectures (crystals, glass, foams and gels for examples) and types of physical behaviour (metals, insulating materials, semi-conductors or superconductors). The aim of Condensed Matter Physics is to understand the properties of materials. The origins of modern technologies such as the transistor or nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, to name but two, can be found in pure research discoveries in this field. Here Antoine Georges invites us on a fascinating journey all the way from matter’s organised forms at the macroscopic scale to its tiniest imperceivable components at the atomic scale.

Abstract

Today, nearly a billion people around the world suffer from hunger. However, we have the technical and scientific means to fight against this scourge. A major international player in poverty reduction policies for several decades, Ismail Serageldin presents here the causes of hunger, the issue of food security and the need to transform world agriculture. “It is time to use our scientific knowledge and technological advances to ensure that all people have their human right to food security. New technologies must be transported from the laboratory to the field, in concerted global action."

Abstract

Since the 1960s, the rise of certain countries, particularly in Asia, has helped to mask the weak development of Latin America, and even the backwardness of other countries, such as sub-Saharan Africa. Today, over a billion people around the world still live in poverty. Political actors currently favour the implementation of interventions at the level of the poor populations rather than adapted macroeconomic and structural policies. François Bourguignon undertakes to question the merits of this choice, to assess the knowledge acquired and to identify the nature of the political constraints in the context of globalization..

Abstract

How to create the conditions favoring biomedical innovation and how to orient research? Elias Zerhouni advocates for the concept of integrated health according to which social and political innovations must enter into synergy with biomedical innovation. Deciphering what the medicine of tomorrow will be - predictive , personalized , preemptive and participative -, he explains why we must preserve the freedom of researchers and how we can encourage innovation in the conduct of scientific projects.

Abstract

Throughout its architectural and stylistic evolution, the garden has constantly reflected a vision of the world by approaching an ideal of life. Originally enclosed space, the garden changes scale to xx th century, driven by the awareness of ecological finitude: it becomes global. To preserve this space subject to the laws of the market and growth at all costs, the gardener must listen to natural genius: imagine, build and maintain the garden in its dynamic aspect, respecting the development of species and their migrations.

Abstract

Abstract

The storage and conversion of energy represents one of the major scientific challenges for coming decades with high stakes for the environment. Which new materials will enable the construction of more efficient and “cleaner” batteries? Jean-Marie Tarascon takes stock of these questions with their implications for our future and that of the planet. He notably discusses lithium-ion technology, the contribution of nanotechnologies and current research into using bio-inspired methods to develop material such as electrode material obtained from the biomass by scientists working in the field of “green chemistry”.
