"The Supreme Court in 1954 declared that every child had a constitutional right to racially non-segregated schooling. Because neither the southern state legislatures nor Congress acted to enforce this constitutional right, however, the burden of doing so fell upon certain Negro school children of the South. Here is a study of these children, these enforcers of the Constitution, and what it has cost them and what it has profited them in the way of happiness and intellectual growth to be the defenders of a great cause. Further, this publication is a piece about how some children lived and learned these past two years. They are children who were in a very special situation, and they were, in a sense, servants of a cause. But I think the special merit of this report is to take our minds off the public role and the function of these children, and lead us to think about them and their individualities. Perhaps, after all, that is their true civil right"--Foreword. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved).
