Abstract

Written as a professional reference book and a case textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of disciplines, Sustainable Communities contains detailed case studies of communities in U.S.A., Europe, and Asia that have become sustainable. In most cases, these communities are either off the central power grid or will be by 2010, and are examples of what regions, cities, towns, and communities—such as colleges, businesses and shopping malls—can do to become sustainable. The book provides a vast amount of materials and data including design, and the legal, economic, and technologic aspects of how environments become sustainable. It provides the general public with a multi-disciplinary perspective and understanding of sustainable development from actual cases, along with some well-established resources and tools. With the international variety of detailed cases and specific analysis of practical sustainability approaches, Sustainable Communities provides guidance and inspiration for everyone from students and academics to policy makers and economists. About the Author: Woodrow W. Clark II, MA3, Ph.D is a Qualitative Economist and co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change. He is the founder of Clark Strategic Partners, a consulting firm in Los Angeles that focuses on renewable energy and technologies along with a team of experts in public policy, accounting, economics, law, and construction. Dr. Clark was also a Visiting Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of California, Los Angeles and Riverside.

Abstract

The Next Economics focuses on how the field of economics must change and incorporate environment, energy, health and new technologies that are called externalities for stopping and reversing climate change. The field of economics needs to become a science. Economics in this book for the Green Industrial Revolution which goes beyond the third industrial revolution since it covers cases, examples and specific economic analyses that both scientific and global. The book concerns climate change and how the Economics for Externalities, needs to range from energy and national security to infrastructure and communities. Solutions and cases of the “Next Economics” are based in western philosophical economic paradigms and how that is changing due to the significance of current global economic and societal concerns. Finally practical applications for economics are explored using global environmental and energy issues. Areas that need a fresh look at and be integrated with economics, include the environment, social and political issues, energy, health climate change and their infrastructures, as they are major components of the macroeconomics for the future. Based on past economic models, these subjects have been lost or ill fitted into modern economic theory. The challenge is to explore and to look deeply into economics in order to provide it a new direction with the possibility for understanding, changing and saving the planet from climate change. This book presents to economists and policy-makers alike areas of environmental economics, energy policy, health and social issues which are needed to stop and reverse climate change.

Abstract

Sustainable Communities Design Handbook: Green Engineering, Architecture, and Technology, Second Edition, brings together the major players responsible for sustainable development at both community and metropolitan scales. The book aims to explain and demonstrate the practice, planning, design, building and managing of the engineering, architectural and economic development of cities and communities to meet sustainable development objectives. Offering a holistic approach to creating sustainable communities, the book includes a 40 percent increase in new methods and technology over the last edition, and 50 percent more case studies from around the world to illustrate how common sustainability problems are solved. As the concept and practices of a sustainable built environment have evolved over the years, it is increasingly recognized that the scope should be expanded beyond individual buildings to the community scale. Written by an international team of engineers, architects, and environmental experts this second edition includes new HVAC technologies for heating and cooling, energy effect technologies for lighting, and new construction materials which improve heating and cooling efficiencies. This new edition will also include critical updates on international codes: LEED, BREEAM, and Green Globes.
