Abstract

Shakespeare's unique status has made critics reluctant to acknowledge the extent to which some of his plays are the outcome of adaptation. In Shakespeare's Stage Traffic Janet Clare re-situates Shakespeare's dramaturgy within the flourishing and competitive theatrical trade of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. She demonstrates how Shakespeare worked with materials which had already entered the dramatic tradition, and how, in the spirit of Renaissance theory, he moulded and converted them to his own use. The book challenges the critical stance that views the Shakespeare canon as essentially self-contained, moves beyond the limitations of generic studies and argues for a more conjoined critical study of early modern plays. Each chapter focuses on specific plays and examines the networks of influence, exchange and competition which characterised stage traffic between playwrights, including Marlowe, Jonson and Fletcher. Overall, the book addresses multiple perspectives relating to authorship and text, performance and reception.

Abstract

This book brings together a number of distinguished historians, literary and cultural scholars to explore the continuum of the English Republic and the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660. Examining the continuities between periods frequently regarded as discrete, the volume not only challenges a traditional period boundary but sheds much new light on the political, religious and cultural conditions before and after the restoration of monarchy and church. Essays address a wide range of topics including rebellion, religion and dissent, republicanism and political theory, theatre, opera and art. Canonical writers Milton, Marvell, Hobbes - are discussed alongside lesser known figures, such as the projector William Petty and the prophetess Eleanor Davies, whose work equally crossed the ideological divide.

Abstract

"It is now common practice to talk of global Shakespeare, but this phenomenon is anything but recent. Indeed, it reaches back centuries. There is a rich and varied history of Shakespeare's early migration that has been overlooked and remains to be systematically documented. This volume uniquely unearths the buried histories and unexpected paths by which Shakespeare entered European consciousness, contributing to national cultures and -in some cases - nation building. International scholars examine decisive, inaugurative moments in the reception of Shakespeare, exploring routes of migration, accommodation and relationships with native literary and theatrical traditions. Each essay offers a detailed account and analysis of the history, conditions and reception of Shakespeare within cultural contexts and consciousness. Migrating Shakespeare: First encounters, routes and networks attends to the first wave of Shakespeare's migration across Europe and in so doing enables us to understand how and why Shakespeare has come to acquire his global reach. It reveals how Shakespeare has mediated between cultures and assumed international status"--

Abstract

This volume challenges a traditional period divide of 1660, exploring continuities with the decades of civil war, the Republic and Restoration and shedding new light on religious, political and cultural conditions before and after the restoration of church and monarchy. The volume marks a significant development in transdisciplinary studies, including, as it does, chapters on political theory, religion, poetry, pamphlets, theatre, opera, portraiture, scientific experiment and philosophy. Chapters show how unresolved issues at national and local level, residual republicanism and religious dissent, were evident in many areas of Restoration life, and recorded in plots against the regime, memoirs, diaries, historical writing, pamphlets and poems. An active promotion of forgetting, the erasing of memories of the Republic and the reconstruction of the old order did not mend the political, religious and cultural divisions that had opened up during the civil wars. In examining such diverse genres as women’s writing, the prayer book, prophetic writings, the publications of the Royal Society, histories of the civil wars by Clarendon and Hobbes, the poetry and prose of Milton and Marvell, plays and opera, court portraiture and political cartoons the volume substantiates its central claim that the Restoration was conditioned by continuity and adaptation of linguistic and artistic discourses.
