Starting from the simple observation that people in Chencha and Arba Minch in Southern Ethiopia are eating more potatoes than before due to the introduction of improved Irish potato varieties by a development Non-Governmental Organization, this study examines the numerous and varied unintended consequences of a development project. These include substantial and widespread dietary changes that contribute to a general nutritional impoverishment, as well as numerous cultural changes. Some, such as the emergence of potato as the new staple food, processes of rural differentiation in Chencha, and the decline of enset cultivation, a multi-use crop of high social value, are already observable. Others, including the possible individualization of social relations linked to the changing social context of agricultural production, and the loss of local knowledge and coping mechanisms, while not observable yet, are certainly lurking in the background. Finally, this study explores the use of agriculture and technology for development and the Ethiopian government s role in agricultural extension, incidentally identifying other unintended consequences.
