Abstract

In the near future, vehicles, travelers, and the infrastructure will collectively have billions of sensors that can communicate with each other. Transportation systems, due to their distributed/mobile nature, can become the ultimate test-bed for a ubiquitous (i.e., embedded, highly-distributed, and sensor-laden) computing environment of unprecedented scale. This environment will enable numerous novel applications and order of magnitude improvement of the performance of existing applications. Information technology is the foundation for implementing new strategies, particularly if they are to be made available in real-time to wireless devices in vehicles or in the hands of people. Contributing are increasingly more sophisticated geospatial and spatio-temporal information management capabilities. Human factors, technology adoption and use, user feedback and incentives for collaborative behavior are areas of technology policy central to the success of this ubiquitous computing environment.

Abstract

This volume investigates the nature of threats facing, or perceived as facing, some of the key players involved in Asian maritime politics. The articles in this collection present case studies on Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia as a whole and focus on domestic definitions of threats and conceptualisations of security. These studies map the differing understandings of danger in this region and explore how contending narratives of "threats" and "security" affect the national maritime security policy deliberations within the claimant countries of this region. Those interested in maritime security and management in Asia will find this collection an invaluable addition to the literature on this topic. .

Abstract

This book explains network science and its applications in data analytics for critical infrastructures, engineered systems, and knowledge acquisition. Each chapter describes step-by-step processes of how network science enables and automates data analytics through examples. The book not only dissects modeling techniques and analytical results but also explores the intrinsic development of these models and analyses. This unique approach bridges the gap between theory and practice and channels' managerial and problem-solving skills. Engineers, researchers, and managers would benefit from the extensive theoretical background and practical examples discussed in this book. Advanced undergraduate students and graduate students in mathematics, statistics, engineering, business, public health, and social science may use this book as a one-semester textbook or a reference book. Readers who are more interested in applications may skip Chapter 1 and peruse through the rest of the book with ease.

Abstract

"Regionally circulated popular culture is now an indispensable part of the average East Asian's daily life. The magnitude, dynamics, and wide spatial coverage of the cultural "flow" signify its potential to become a powerful vehicle for bringing to life the 1998 ASEAN-Plus-Three Summit's vision statement on an integrated East Asian community. Yet the creative industry-produced popular culture flows and the resulting immense number of intra-regional contacts at the people-to-people level may also trigger instantaneous and massive nationalist responses to any imported cultural program. The impact of cross-border popular cultural flows on East Asians' competing national selves, and the potential of translating pleasure from popular cultural consumption into regional integration urges are thus issues carrying political significance and consequence for East Asia, and possibly with serious repercussions on the world. To contribute towards a comprehensive understanding of the junction between the ever dense cross-border cultural traffic and an incipient East Asian identity, this edited volume brings together eleven scholars from eight countries to explore interactions of popular cultural flows, state politics, audiences' receptions, and public debates in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam and China, and across the region as a whole. These investigations provide fresh conceptual and empirical insights into the study of the dynamic and complex interface of cultural adaptation, political identification and regional identity formation in the pop cultural consumption process in East Asia"--
