Abstract

Intelligence and security informatics (ISI) can be broadly defined as the study of the development and use of advanced information technologies and systems for national and international security-related applications. The First and Second Symposiums on ISI were held in Tucson, Arizona, in 2003 and 2004, respectively. In 2005, the IEEE International Conference on ISI was held in Atlanta, Georgia. These ISI conferences brought together academic researchers, law enforcement and intelligence experts, information technology consultants and practitioners to discuss their research and practice related to various ISI topics including ISI data management, data and text mining for ISI applications, terrorism informatics, deception detection, terrorist and criminal social network analysis, crime analysis, monitoring and surveillance, policy studies and evaluation, and information assurance, among others. We continued these stream of ISI conferences by organizing the Workshop on Intelligence and Security Informatics (WISI 2006) in conjunction with the Pacific Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD 2006). WISI 2006 provided a stimulating forum for ISI researchers in Pacific Asia and other regions of the world to exchange ideas and report research progress. WISI 2006 was hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Arizona, the Nanyang Technological University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The one-day program included one keynote speech, four refereed paper sessions, two invited sessions and a poster reception.

Abstract

The Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD) is a leading international conference in the area of data mining and knowledge discovery. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the successful annual series of PAKDD conferences held in the Asia Pacific region. It was with pleasure that we hosted PAKDD 2006 in Singapore again, since the inaugural PAKDD conference was held in Singapore in 1997. PAKDD 2006 continues its tradition of providing an international forum for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all aspects of KDD data mining, including data cleaning, data warehousing, data mining techniques, knowledge visualization, and data mining applications. This year, we received 501 paper submissions from 38 countries and regions in Asia, Australasia, North America and Europe, of which we accepted 67 (13.4%) papers as regular papers and 33 (6.6%) papers as short papers. The distribution of the accepted papers was as follows: USA (17%), China (16%), Taiwan (10%), Australia (10%), Japan (7%), Korea (7%), Germany (6%), Canada (5%), Hong Kong (3%), Singapore (3%), New Zealand (3%), France (3%), UK (2%), and the rest from various countries in the Asia Pacific region.

Abstract

Intelligence and security informatics (ISI) is concerned with the study of the development and use of advanced information technologies and systems for national, international, and societal security-related applications. The annual IEEE International Conference series on ISI was started in 2003 and the first four meetings were held in the United States. In 2006, the Workshop on ISI (http://isi. se. cuhk. edu. hk/2006/) was held in Singapore in conjunction with the Pacific Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, with over 100 contributors and participants from all over the world. These past ISI conferences have brought together academic researchers, law enforcement and intelligence experts, information technology consultants, and practitioners to discuss their research and practice related to various ISI topics including ISI data management, data and text mining for ISI applications, terrorism informatics, deception and intent detection, terrorist and criminal social network analysis, public health and bio-security, crime analysis, cyber-infrastructure protection, transportation infrastructure security, policy studies and evaluation, and information assurance, among others. We continued this stream of ISI conferences by organizing the 2007 Pacific Asia Workshop on ISI (PAISI 2007) to especially provide a stimulating forum for ISI researchers in Pacific Asia and other regions of the world to exchange ideas and report research progress. PAISI 2007 was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Arizona, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
