"Professare nel battesimo la stessa fede, condividere lo stesso calice, accettare reciprocamente i ministri. Le tre condizioni indispensabili perché le chiese potessero vivere in comunione le une con le altre e in continuità con gli insegnamenti della chiesa universale furono finalmente poste nel documento di convergenza Battesimo, Eucaristia, Ministero (BEM), approvato da Faith and Order il 12 gennaio 1982. Ci erano voluti quasi vent'anni di lavoro e di preparazione perché nella sala conferenze dell'Oasis de los Santos Apóstoles si compisse il "miracolo di Limaµ, un vero e proprio kairos ecumenico: così si mostrò agli occhi dei presenti. La punta più avanzata di una generazione di professionisti nel campo del dialogo ecumenico offriva dunque a tutte le realtà ecclesiali del World Council of Churches la possibilità di dimostrare che il tempo della negoziazione era finito e che il consenso teologico era ormai maturo per differire sul piano ecclesiale il compito di realizzare l'unità. Che fosse convinzione o illusione, di fatto le resistenze, i grippaggi e i ripiegamenti identitari fecero del BEM in poco tempo il frutto maturo di un raccolto mancato. A quasi quarant'anni di distanza questo volume prova a spiegare come un successo così lungamente pianificato da Faith and Order sia potuto arrivare troppo presto, o troppo tardi, ma in ogni caso fuori fase, rispetto al ciclo delle stagioni ecumeniche delle chiese, finendo suo malgrado nella collezione di fossili del movimento ecumenico"-- Back cover.
