Abstract

We are delighted to welcome you to the 15th ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM) 2022. While originally scheduled to be held in Tempe, Arizona, the conference had to move in late December 2021 to a virtual format. This difficult decision was made in light of the surge in Omicron cases, enhanced travel restrictions from various parts of the world, and companies scrapping office-return deadlines without setting a new date. WSDM (pronounced "wisdom") is one of the premier conferences on web-inspired research involving search and data mining. WSDM publishes original, high-quality papers related to search and data mining on the Web and the Social Web, with an emphasis on practical yet principled novel models of search and data mining, algorithm design and analysis, economic implications, and in-depth experimental analysis of accuracy and performance. This year's conference hosts an exciting technical program, including invited talks, as well as refereed full papers. The conference hosts an exciting technical program, including 7 workshops, 7 tutorials, 9 doctoral consortium presentations, 14 technical demos, 160 research papers, industry day presentations, smart city day presentations, and 3 exciting keynote talks on timely topics:Yejin Choi (University of Washington) - Knowledge is Power: Symbolic Knowledge Distillation, Commonsense Morality, and Multimodal Script KnowledgeGeorge Karypis (Amazon, University of Minnesota) - Graph Neural Network Research at AWS AIRicardo Baeza-Yates (Northeastern University) - Ethics Challenges in AI.

Abstract

"This comprehensive textbook presents data structures and algorithms for storing, indexing, clustering, classifying, and accessing common multimedia data representations"--Provided by publisher. "Multimedia data require specialized management techniques because the representations of color, time, semantic concepts, and other underlying information can be drastically different from one another. The user's subjective judgment can also have significant impact on what data or features are relevant in a given context. These factors affect both the performance of the retrieval algorithms and their effectiveness. This textbook on multimedia data management techniques offers a unified perspective on retrieval efficiency and effectiveness. It provides a comprehensive treatment, from basic to advanced concepts, that will be useful to readers of different levels, from advanced undergraduate and graduate students to researchers and to professionals"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

The increasing costs of creating and maintaining infrastructures for delivering services to consumers have led to the emergence of cloud based third party service providers renting networks, computation power, storage, and even entire software application suites. On the other hand, service customers demand competitive pricing, service level agreements, and increased flexibility and scalability. Service consumers also expect process and data security, 24/7 service availability, and compliance with privacy regulations. This book focuses on such challenges associated with the design, implementation, deployment, and management of data and software as a service. The 12 papers presented in this volume were contributed by leaders in academia and industry, and  were reviewed and supervised by an expert editorial board. They describe cutting-edge approaches in areas like service design, service security, service optimization, and service migration.

Abstract

This volume collects the proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Multimedia Information Systems, MIS 2005, which was held during September 19-21, 2005 in the beautiful town of Sorrento, Italy. The MIS series of workshops started in 1995 with the aim of fostering - terdisciplinary discussions and research in all aspects of multimedia information systems, in all their diversity. Since then, in MIS workshops, issues ranging from fundamental multimedia information management research to advanced app- cations in multimedia systems related ?elds have been discussed, new systems have been reported, and the lessons learned have provided new insights into this dynamic and exciting area of computer science and engineering. As the program chairs of the MIS 2005 workshop, we note that while desi- ing an e?ective multimedia system, two complementary issues have to be taken into account: (a) the need to use appropriate technologies in acquiring, p- cessing, and delivering multimedia data which manifest themselves under very di?erent shapes; and (b) the need for modeling, indexing, querying, retrieving, mining, and visualizing data under di?erent system and device capabilities, for di?erent users. Therefore, besides the development of more traditional content management technologies, there are emerging needs to gather media from se- ing devices in the environmental context, for informedprocessingofmediabased on the current task and resources, and for making the results available to the user in the most suitable form based on the capabilities and preferences of the user.
