Abstract

Abstract

HIIT-RUNNING PROTOCOL: CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW FITNESS LEVEL RESPONDERS AND EARLY PREDICTORS OF RESPONSIVENESS IN MILITARY PERSONNEL

Abstract

It is established that high intensity interval training (HIIT) improves cardiovascular parameters in trained individuals, athletes, subjects with underlying chronic diseases and inhealthy deconditioned subjects. The effects in healthy deconditioned subjects were established on cardiovascular parameters such as heart rate variability (HRV), arterial stiffness (CAVI), resting heart rate (rHR) and systolic blood pressure (SBP). To assist in the ongoing development and optimisation of Fit4Duty, a HIIT-runningbased programme, by identifying early responders among deconditioned military personnel. The rationale behind this is to uncover one or more specific, measurable, parameter(s) that would have a predictive value of progress in physical performance during a training protocol. Follow-up of this specific parameter would simplify the need for time intensive re-assessment and would streamline the process of personalizing and adjusting a training protocol. A pilot study was conducted. Twenty individuals who serve in the Belgian military were recruited to participate in Fit4Duty. A 12-week HIIT-running-based programme, in order to comply with the yearly PhEFtests (Physical Evaluation Fitness tests). After a significant dropout, eight individuals performed both baseline and at least one follow-up 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (IFT). Based on the results, a progressive HIIT programme was drawn up for each individual subject. Data collection of the physiological parameters has been performed using Zephyr Performance Systems by Zephyr Technology Corporation. The Mann-Whitney U test was executed to determine significant differences in cardiovascular parameters between responders and non-responders. Based on the included parameters, no significant differences were found between responders and non-responders. While theFit4Duty programme is able to demonstrate a change in VO2 max, it is currently not able to determine an early responsiveness marker. Due to an insufficiency in power, layout, and follow-through of the programme, this research does not succeed in providing a clear answer to its research hypothesis. Further fine-tuning and more thoroughly monitored personal factors are necessary for the future implementation of the Fit4Duty programme. Possible adjustments include different inclusion criteria regarding physical activity level, a stricter regulation of the subjects’ physical activity level, and the inclusion of 24h follow-up of physiological measurements.

Abstract

This PhD is a part of a multicentre FWO-TBM project which aims to develop a clinical decision-making framework based on comprehensive assessment of muscle and tendon architecture in children with cerebral palsy. The focus of this PhD project is on developing a treatment algorithm for strength interventions. This will be achieved by creating an integrated evaluation protocol to quantify the different components of muscle and tendon morphology for clinical health professionals. The protocol will be used to establish prediction models of strength training effects based on morphological muscle and tendon properties (MMT), through which treatment algorithms, enriched by clinical expert knowledge, can be developed. These Treatment Algorithms based on Muscle and Tendon Architecture (TAMTA) will eventually guide patient-specific selection of rationalized treatments.
