Abstract

Offering a comprehensive introduction to equilibrium electrochemistry, this primer deals with electrode potentials and their applications. It builds on a knowledge of elementary thermodynamics, informs the reader of the origin of electrode potentials, and shows how these are used to deduce a wealth of chemically important information such as equilibrium constants, free energy, enthalpy and entropy changes of chemical reactions, activity coefficients, and the selective sensing of ions. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the foundations of this discipline and how it may be used to study problems of chemical interest. The authors have minimized the mathematical aspects of the subject without any sacrifices in clarity.

Abstract

The power of electrochemical measurements in respect of thermodynamics, kinetics and analysis is widely recognized but the subject can be unpredictable to the novice even if they have a strong physical and chemical background, especially if they wish to pursue quantitative measurements. Accordingly, some significant experiments are perhaps wisely never attempted while the literature is sadly replete with flawed attempts at rigorous voltammetry. This textbook considers how to go about designing, explaining and interpreting experiments centered around various forms of voltammetry (cyclic, microelectrode, hydrodynamic, and so on). The reader is assumed to have a knowledge to Masters level of physical chemistry but no exposure to electrochemistry in general, or voltammetry in particular. While the book is designed to 'stand alone', references to important research papers are given to provide an entry into the literature. The book gives clear introductions to the theories of electron transfer and of diffusion in its early chapters. These are developed to interpret voltammetric experiments at macro-electrodes before considering microelectrode behavior. A subsequent chapter introduces convection and describes hydrodynamic electrodes. Later chapters describe the voltammetric measurement of homogeneous kinetics, the study of adsorption on electrodes and the use of voltammetry for electroanalysis.

Abstract

"There is a wealth of voltammetric data from a range of systems, with numerous diagrams showing actual voltammograms, greatly helpful to a reader new to the field, with underpinning mathematical equations and supportive mechanistic explanation. This is a most useful and instructive book."--Chemistry & Industry --Back Cover. In comparison to the first edition, two new chapters -- transport via migration and nanoelectrochemistry -- are added. Minor changes and updates are also made throughout the textbook to facilitate enhanced understanding and greater clarity of exposition. --Back Cover. The power of electrochemical measurements in respect of thermodynamics, kinetics and analysis is widely recognized but the subject can be unpredictable to the novice even if they have a strong physical and chemical background, especially if they wish to pursue the study of quantitative measurements further. Accordingly, some significant experiments are perhaps wisely never attempted while the literature is sadly replete with flawed attempts at rigorous voltammetry. -- Back Cover. This textbook considers how to go about designing, explaining and interpreting experiments centered around various forms of voltammetry (cyclic, microelectrode, hydrodynamic, etc.). The reader is assumed to have attained a knowledge equivalent to Master's level of physical chemistry but no exposure to electrochemistry in general, or voltammetry in particular. While the book is designed to "stand alone", references to important research papers are given to provide an introductory entry into the literature. -- Back Cover.

Abstract

Aiming to offer an accessible introduction to one of the most difficult for beginners areas of chemistry, this primer covers a wide range of material in a succinct, easy-to-understand format. The first two chapters cover the structure of atoms, ions, and molecules. The next few chapters discuss such important issues as chemical reactivity, kinetics, and equilibria, while the final chapter deals with more advanced subject matter, drawing on imaginative examples from the outside world. Aware of the fact that beginners are easily intimidated by complex mathematical formulas, the authors have striven to keep quantitative aspects to a mininmum throughout.

Accordingly, some significant experiments are perhaps wisely never attempted while the literature is sadly replete with flawed attempts at rigorous voltammetry. The reader is assumed to have knowledge of physical chemistry equivalent to Master's level but no exposure to electrochemistry, or voltammetry in particular. While the book is designed to stand alone, references to important research papers are given to provide an introductory entry into the literature. In this fourth edition, important parts of the text have been re-written for optimal clarity, recognising that many readers will not have English as a first language. Updates to the text have been made and new, additional material included, expanding the text whilst retaining the overall concise, to-the-point approach which has proved popular with the readers of the previous editions."--
