In Imagining the Text , James Brown examines ekphrasis – the verbal representation of a visual representation – in Wirnt von Gravenberg’s thirteenth-century Arthurian romance Wigalois , one of the most popular and enduring stories in the Middle High German literary tradition. Through close reading of the text and examining illustrated Wigalois manuscripts, early print editions, and frescoes, Brown explores how ekphrasis structures the narrative, harmonizes potential conflicts in the text, and contributes to the construction of courtly identity. Imagining the Text demonstrates that the vibrant symbiosis of word and image is crucial to the poem’s sustained popularity for more than six hundred years, and contributes to the history of the book and to the study of medieval and modern modes of perception.

En 1943, Clarence Carnes organise avec un ami un hold-up qui fit une victime. Il est alors condamné et transféré à Alcatraz, une prison américaine reconnue pour être une des plus sûres jamais construite et abritant les plus durs détenus du système fédéral. En 1946, Carnes refuse d'aider un chef de gang Cretzer qui a pris en otage, dans sa cellule, des gardiens. Carnes est muté dans un quartier pilote, le "birdman", où les détenus peuvent jouer aux échecs ou poursuivre des études.

Scaling relationships have been a persistent theme in biology at least since the time of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo. While there have been many excellent empirical and theoretical investigations, there has been little attempt to synthesize this diverse but interrelated area of biology. In an effort to fill this void, Scaling in Biology, the first general treatment of scaling in biology in over 15 years, covers a broad spectrum of the most relevant topics in a series of chapters written by experts in the field.
