All of the subjects covered in this book are extensively dealt with and presented in a pedagogic form. These include the presentation of an environment for the route to chaos by quasi-periodicity (which is related to the Landau-Lifschitz and Ruelle-Takens scenario's concerning the onset of turbulence); the theories of 1-dimensional dynamics, singularities in planar vector fields, and quasi-periodicity in dissipative systems.

Wie wiskunde gebruikt, maar de basistechnieken niet goed beheerst, loopt vroeg of laat vast. De Spijkerboekjes geven de mogelijkheid om die technieken in zo kort mogelijke tijd aan te leren. Wiskunde leer je in de eerste plaats door te doen. Daarom volgt na elke stukje uitleg een groot aantal oefeningen. De zeven Spijkers behandelen de onderwerpen van de basiswiskunde gestapeld, in een doorlopende leerlijn, maar de delen zijn ook prima afzonderlijk te gebruiken.Dit tweede deel in de Spijkerreeks gaat over algebra. Na uitleg en oefening van het letterreken volgt het oplossen van eerste- en tweedegraadsvergelijkingen. Voor de gevorderden komt daarna een aantal andere vergelijkingen aan bod, en vervolgens rijen en driehoeksmeetkunde. De overgang van het vwo naar universiteit of hbo levert bij het vak wiskunde steeds vaker problemen op. Daar zijn twee oorzaken voor aan te wijzen. Ten eerste is de wiskunde-didactiek in de afgelopen decennia in toenemende mate gericht op inzicht, ten koste van het inslijpen van routines, en dat begint zich te wreken. En ten tweede is een aantal onderwerpen, met name uit de analyse, overgeheveld van verplichte stof naar keuzestof, en bij de vernieuwing van de tweede fase gebeurt dat momenteel opnieuw. Niet elke aankomende student heeft die stof dus gehad: bijspijkeren is in veel gevallen geboden. Gelukkig zijn daar uitstekende boekjes voor. Dit boekje, het tweede uit een reeks van zeven in de serie Spijker, behandelt de elementaire algebra zoals die vroeger in de onderbouw van het vwo werd behandeld (een deel daarvan is tegenwoordig helaas geschrapt). Het bevat een helder overzicht van de theorie en een groot aantal opgaven met uitwerkingen. Kennis van het eerste deel van de reeks wordt voorondersteld.
