È il sesto volume della collana “Lettere Circolari” dei Superiori generali scj, iniziata con le “Lettere” del p. Dehon. I criteri redazionali sono sempre gli stessi: una nota biografica sull'Autore; le Lettere riprodotte in ordine cronologico nella lingua originale, con a fianco la versione italiana; una numerazione marginale progressiva per individuare più facilmente eventuali citazioni o rimandi; e, alla fine, l'indice generale, preceduto da un indice analitico, particolarmente utile per individuare i temi trattati e le lettere nelle quali i diversi problemi sono affrontati. Il p. Bourgeois è stato Superiore generale dal 1967 al 1979: il periodo più caldo e più controverso del post-concilio. Molte cose erano cambiate, non solo nella società, ma anche nella Chiesa e nella Congregazione. Erano messe in questione l'identità della nostra spiritualità e la stessa esistenza della Congregazione. Assumendo la carica di Superiore generale egli era pienamente cosciente di queste sfide. E già nel discorso pronunciato a conclusione del XV Capitolo non ha esitato a chiedere a tutti “una precisa presa di coscienza sulla necessità di un profondo rinnovamento: nella concezione della vita religiosa, nelle nostre forme di vita e di organizzazione,... nei nostri obiettivi apostolici e, soprattutto, nella ispirazione che deve animare ogni nostra attività” (cf. p. 11). Nelle varie “Lettere” egli riprenderà poi, uno per uno, questi temi, sollecitando l'intera Congregazione a “ridefinire la sua identità dopo il Concilio Vaticano II”, aggiornando la teologia sulla natura della Vita religiosa, e, in particolare, rinnovando la spiritualità del Cuore di Gsù e i modi concreti di esprimerla e di viverla. È all'interno di queste problematiche che è maturata l'esigenza di rielaborare a fondo prima la “Regola di Vita” e poi le “Nuove Costituzioni”. In tutto questo processo, il This is the sixth volume of the collection of "Circular Letters" by the S.C.J. Superior Generals, which started with the "Letters" of Fr. Dehon. The editorial criteria are always the same: a biographical note on the author; the letters reproduced in chronological order in the original language with the Italian version beside them; progressive numeration in the margin to facilitate the identification of possible quotes or inter-textual references; and, at the end, the general index, preceded by an analytical index, which is particularly useful for identifying the themes dealt with and the letters in which the various problems are tackled. Fr. Bourgeois was Superior General from 1967 to 1979: the most heated and controversial period of the post-Council years. Many things were changed, not only in society but also in the Church and in the Congregation. The identity of our spirituality was questioned and also the very existence of the Congregation. In taking on the responsibility of Superior General he was fully aware of these challenges. As early as his address, delivered at the conclusion of the XV Chapter, he did not hesitate to ask everyone to perform "a precise examination of conscience on the need for profound renewal: in the concept of the religious life, in our forms of life and of organization,... in our apostolic objectives and, above all, in the inspiration which must inspire each and every one of our activities" (Cf. p.11). The various "Circular Letters" will then deal, one by one, with these themes, urging the whole Congregation to "redefine its identity after the Council of Vatican II", bringing up to date the theology of the nature of the religious life, and, in particular, renewing the spirituality of the Heart of Jesus and the concrete ways of expressing it and of living it.
