Nach der gewaltsamen Auflösung der Kommune wurde der französische Maler Gustave Courbet wegen seiner Beteiligung an der Zerstörung der Colonne Vendôme zu sechs Monaten Gefängnis verurteilt. Später im Mai 1873 verlangte die neue französische Regierung auch noch Schadenersatz (335.000 Francs). Gustave Courbet floh in Richtung Schweiz, wo er vier Jahre später im Exil starb.'Der Mann, der an diesem 23. Juli 1873 die Grenze überschritt, war ein toter Mann, und die Polizei wusste nichts davon. Tot für die Drohungen, die Erpressungen, die Machenschaften. Ein toter Mann, der noch vor Ablauf einer Woche mit einer Frau schlafen würde.In seinem Schweizer Exil hat Gustave Courbet den grössten Freuden seines Lebens gefrönt: Er hat gemalt, er hat geprasst, er hat in den Flüssen und Seen gebadet. Man staunt über die Freiheit dieses Körpers, in dessen Kielwasser sich die Gassen des Marktfleckens entwirren, über diesen dicken Bauch, der langsam die Gewässer, die Täler, die Wälder zerteilt. Wenn er malte, tauchte Courbet mit dem Gesicht in die Natur ein, mit Augen, Lippen, Nase, mit beiden Händen, auf die Gefahr hin, sich zu verlieren, die Gefahr vor allem, geblendet zu werden, überwältigt, von sich selbst befreit.Was ist das Geheimnis, das die Jahre in La Tour-de-Peilz, am Genfersee, überstrahlte, jene vier Jahre, welche die Spezialisten üblicherweise mit zwei Sätzen abtun: Courbet malt nichts Rechtes mehr und sauft sich zu Tode? Dieses Geheimnis, im Feuer der Pariser Kommune erprobt, ist die ansteckende Freude des Menschen, der sich selbst regiert.' David BoscEin glückliches Exil (Originaltitel: 'La claire fontaine') ist in den Editions Verdier erschienen und hat 2013 den Prix Marcel-Aymé und 2014 den Schweizer Literaturpreis gewonnen. Er wurde für den Prix Décembre und Prix Goncourt nominiert.

"The edited collection focuses on the links between young people and African popular culture. It explores popular culture produced and consumed by young people in contemporary Africa. And by "culture," we mean all kinds of texts or representations-visual, oral, written, performative, fictional, social, and virtual-created by African youth, mostly about their lives and their immediate societies, and for themselves, but also consumed by the larger public, and shared locally and globally. We proceed from the premise that cultural texts not only function as "social facts" as Karin Barber argues, but that they double as "commentaries upon, and interpretations of, social facts. They are part of social reality, but they also take up an attitude to social reality" (2007, 04). So, the work focuses specifically on what African youth produce as popular culture, under what conditions or contexts they produce such work, how they produce those texts, why they produce them, the aesthetic dimensions of these texts as cultural artifacts, and why these textual practices matter as social facts, as interpretive acts, and as cultural symbols of the general cultural activism of young people in a rapidly changing world, a world where the global cultural economy is the prime terrain for the relentless struggles over the meanings that come to shape political-economic and social systems"--
