Cet ouvrage entend démontrer qu’une solide culture de l’écriture de l’histoire existait dans la Syrie du 2e/8e siècle, et propose de nouvelles approches méthodologiques afin d’offrir un accès vers cette historiographie perdue, tiraillée entre mémoire et oubli. En étudiant la fabrique des héros omeyyades ou des mythes d’origines abbassides, cette étude s’efforce de mettre au jour les significations successives données à l’histoire syrienne, et d’identifier les différentes strates d’écritures et de réécritures de l’histoire au cours des premiers siècles de l’islam. L’ensemble de ces éléments conduit à proposer une histoire du sens de l’espace syrien, articulée autour de la thématique du pouvoir, qui donne une profonde cohérence à la période, par-delà la césure dynastique de 132/750. This book intends to demonstrate that a robust culture of historical writing existed in 2nd/8th century Syria, and to offer new methodological approaches to access this now lost history, torn between memory and oblivion. By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this study aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. Taken together, these elements make possible a history of the meaning of the very space of Syria, articulated around power and its expression, which grants a clear coherence to the period, extending well beyond the dynastic caesura of 132/750.

The Umayyads, the first dynasty of Islam, ruled over a vast empire from their central province of Syria, providing a line of caliphs from 661 to 750. Another branch later ruled in al-Andalus – Islamic Spain – from 756 to 1031, ruling first as emirs and then as caliphs themselves. This book is the first to bring together studies of this far-flung family and treat it not as two unrelated caliphates but as a single enterprise. Yet for all that historians have made note of Umayyad accomplishments in the Near East and al-Andalus, Umayyad legacies – what later generations made of these caliphs and their achievements – are poorly understood. Building on new interest in the study of memory and Islamic historiography and including interdisciplinary perspectives from Arabic literature, art, and archaeology, this book highlights Umayyad achievements and the shaping of our knowledge of the Umayyad past.

"Traditional accounts of Arabicization have often favoured linear narratives of language change instead of delving into the diversity of peoples, processes, and languages that informed the fate of Arabic in the early Islamic world. Using a wide range of case studies from the caliphal centres at Damascus and Baghdad to the provinces of Arabia, Egypt, Armenia, and Central Asia, Navigating language reconsiders these prevailing narratives by analysing language change in different regions of the early Islamic world through the lens of multilingualism. This volume complicates the story of Arabic by building on the work of scholars of Late Antiquity who have abundantly demonstrated the benefits of embracing multilingualism as a heuristic framework. The three main themes include imperial strategies of language use, the participation of local elites in the process of language change, and the encounters between languages on the page, in the markets, and at work. This volume brings together historians and art historians working on the interplay of Arabic and other languages during the early Islamic period to provide a critical resource and reference tool for students and scholars of the cultural and social history of language in the Near East and beyond."--

Vingt-et-une communications par des chercheurs travaillant sur le terrain au Proche-Orient et en Egypte étudient sur des cas concrets l’évolution démographique et sociale entraînée par le passage de la domination byzantine à la nouvelle administration arabe, omeyyade puis abbasside. Les conditions générales de l’agriculture dans cette vaste zone sont examinées, complétées par des analyses plus détaillées concernant la mise en valeur des régions comme l’Osrhoène, la ville de Resafa et son territoire, la Syrie centrale et son prolongement steppique oriental, Damas et son arrière-pays, l’évolution de l’habitat urbain de la Palestine Seconde à l’Est du Jourdain, le développement en florissantes bourgades d’anciens forts du limes, la réoccupation de sites antiques (dont le sanctuaire nabatéen de Khirbet ed-Darih) par des villages chrétiens puis musulmans. Les fluctuations du nomadisme dans les zones steppiques et leur impact sur les essais de sédentarisme sont bien mis en évidence tant dans les marges arides de la Syrie centrale que dans la partie située à l’Est du delta du Nil. La fortification des villes reste un trait constant de l’époque. L’ère islamique se caractérise par l’abandon du limes romain le long de la strata Diocletiana et par le maintien et le renforcement des défenses urbaines le long de la côte méditerranéenne, devenue désormais une frontière entre Byzance et les Arabes après avoir perdu son rôle de boulevard commercial avec l’occupation perse puis la conquête islamique. Le christianisme se maintient et reste majoritaire dans cette région jusqu’aux IXe –Xe siècles , même si l’on observe à partir du VIIIe siècle un certain tassement. Les nombreuses inscriptions et la qualité des fouilles actuelles permettent une compréhension de plus en plus fine du phénomène d’éradication des images d’êtres animés des mosaïques et des sculptures. Certains lieux de pèlerinage déclinent vers le IXe siècle, comme Abou Mina, voire dès le courant du VIIIe siècle comme à Saint-Hilarion mais se maintiennent encore à Qal‘at Seman au XIIe siècle ou à Resafa jusqu’aux raids mongols. Dans l’ensemble, malgré des bouleversements importants dans les élites et l’émergence du pouvoir omeyyade, qui utilise abondamment comme gestionnaires les chrétiens locaux, l’Etat se maintient et l’islamisation du pouvoir ne s’effectue que progressivement, si l’on excepte quelques violentes crises. Sous les abbassides, le transfert du pouvoir à Bagdad, où les traditions sassanides se font à nouveau sentir, entraîne un dépérissement du sud et renforce le dynamisme et la prospérité de la région mésopotamienne.

Christophe Picard, au fil d'une riche production et de ses enseignements dans les universités de Saint-Étienne, Toulouse et Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, n'a jamais quitté des yeux les horizons maritimes. Il a montré la mise en valeur précoce des côtes contrôlées par des pouvoirs islamiques et retracé les évolutions de la présence des flottes de l’Islam médiéval, tant en Méditerranée que dans l’océan Atlantique. Il a aussi longuement labouré les terres d’al-Andalus et en particulier celles relevant du Portugal actuel, étudiant tour à tour les dynamiques de peuplement, les relations entre musulmans et chrétiens ou le commerce. Ce faisant, il a abordé des thèmes et des espaces qui avaient été négligés et qu’il lui revient d’avoir mis en lumière parmi les premiers. Il a participé ainsi à dessiner les contours d’une Méditerranée moins exclusivement byzantine et latine et d’un monde islamique qui redonnait toute sa place à son extrémité occidentale. Si le Maghreb et la péninsule Ibérique ont prioritairement retenu son attention, il a largement collaboré avec ses collègues spécialistes de l’Occident latin et de l’Orient islamique. Historien des textes, il a aussi eu à cœur d’associer l’archéologie à ses réflexions. The papers in this first volume of the new Oriental Institute series LAMINE are derived from a conference entitled "Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians in the Umayyad State," held at the University of Chicago on June 17-18, 2011. The goal of the conference was to address a simple question: Just what role did non-Muslims play in the operations of the Umayyad state? It has always been clear that the Umayyad family (r. 41-132/661-750) governed populations in the rapidly expanding empire that were overwhelmingly composed of non-Muslims -- mainly Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians -- and the status of those non-Muslim communities under Umayyad rule, and more broadly in early Islam, has been discussed continuously for more than a century. The role of non-Muslims within the Umayyad state has been, however, largely neglected. The eight papers in this volume thus focus on non-Muslims who participated actively in the workings of the Umayyad government. This new Oriental Institute series (Late Antique and Medieval Islamic Near East (LAMINE)) aims to publish a variety of scholarly works, including monographs, edited volumes, critical text editions, translations, studies of corpora of documents -- in short, any work that offers a significant contribution to understanding the Near East between roughly 200 and 1000 CE
