Naturschutz und seine Maßnahmen existieren nicht losgelöst von der Gesellschaft. Naturschutz ist vielmehr ein Politikfeld, eine gesellschaftliche Übereinkunft und wird daher neben naturwissenschaftlich-ökologischen auch stark von sozialwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen getragen. Er ist folglich in den gesellschaftlichen Kontext eingebettet, was bedeutet, dass Ansprüche verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Gruppen und Interessen aufeinander treffen und dadurch mitunter Konflikte entstehen. Neuere Erkenntnisse der Forschung zeigen, dass oft kooperative Ansätze möglich sind, indem Aspekte von Naturschutz und Landschaftspflege mit Ansätzen einer nachhaltigen regionalen Entwicklung verknüpft werden. Insbesondere in Zeiten knapper öffentlicher Kassen sind solche innovativen, beispielhaften Konzepte und Strategien gefragt, die gleichzeitig Vorteile für ökologische wie ökonomische Interessen schaffen.Ein Großteil der Beiträge in diesem Band geht zurück auf Vorträge, die anlässlich des 52. Deutschen Geographentages in Trier im Herbst 2005 im Arbeitskreis Geographie und Naturschutz gehalten wurden. Sie befassen sich in einer breit gefächerten Blickweise mit den natürlichen und sozialen Prozessen im Spannungsfeld von Natur und Gesellschaft und zeigen beispielhaft einige komplexe und transdisziplinäre Fragestellungen des Politikfeldes Naturschutz auf.

This open access book discusses socio-environmental interactions in the middle to late Holocene, covering specific areas along the ancient Silk Road regions. Over twenty chapters provide insight into this topic from various disciplinary angles and perspectives, ranging from archaeology, paleoclimatology, antiquity, historical geography, agriculture, carving art and literacy. The Silk Road is a modern concept for an ancient network of trade routes that for centuries facilitated and intensified processes of cultural interaction and goods exchange between West China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Coherent patterns and synchronous events in history suggest possible links between social upheaval, resource utilization and climate or environment forces along the Silk Road and in a broader area. Post-graduates in studying will benefit from this work, as well as it will stimulate young researchers to further explore the role played by the environment in long-term socio-cultural changes.
