Migrationen, also dauernde Verlagerungen des Wohnortes von Einzelpersonen oder Gruppen, sind Indikatoren der globalen Vernetzung und damit auch der Globalgeschichte. Darüber hinaus waren sie eine Erscheinung der Menschheit von Anfang an. Aus dem Mittelalter sind zwar bestimmte Migrationen, etwa die sogenannte germanische Völkerwanderung, schon gut bekannt, sie wurden aber noch nie systematisch erfasst. Auch fehlte eine Anwendung moderner sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Theorien, Fragestellungen und Methoden sowie eine Einordnung mittelalterlicher Wanderungen dieser Art in die allgemeine Globalgeschichte.In dem Band werden in 25 Artikeln Migrationen von ca. 500 bis 1500 n. Chr. analysiert und dargestellt. Er beschränkt sich aber nicht auf das herkömmliche lateineuropäische Mittelalter, sondern bezieht all jene Regionen ein, die mit der römisch-katholischen Welt oder untereinander in Verbindung standen (Europa, Afrika und die südliche Hälfte Asiens). Andererseits werden allgemeine Migrationserscheinungen, wie der Sklavenhandel und der Aufbruch von Asketen, Pilgern und Missionaren nach der Fremde behandelt.
