Abstract

This volume gathers selected contributions from the participants of the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) workshop Coupled Mathematical Models for Physical and Biological Nanoscale Systems and their Applications, who explore various aspects of the analysis, modeling and applications of nanoscale systems, with a particular focus on low dimensional nanostructures and coupled mathematical models for their description. Due to the vastness, novelty and complexity of the interfaces between mathematical modeling and nanoscience and nanotechnology, many important areas in these disciplines remain largely unexplored. In their efforts to move forward, multidisciplinary research communities have come to a clear understanding that, along with experimental techniques, mathematical modeling and analysis have become crucial to the study, development and application of systems at the nanoscale. The conference, held at BIRS in autumn 2016, brought together experts from three different communities working in fields where coupled mathematical models for nanoscale and biosystems are especially relevant: mathematicians, physicists (both theorists and experimentalists), and computational scientists, including those dealing with biological nanostructures. Its objectives: summarize the state-of-the-art; identify and prioritize critical problems of major importance that require solutions; analyze existing methodologies; and explore promising approaches to addressing the challenges identified. The contributions offer up-to-date introductions to a range of topics in nano and biosystems, identify important challenges, assess current methodologies and explore promising approaches. As such, this book will benefit researchers in applied mathematics, as well as physicists and biologists interested in coupled mathematical models and their analysis for physical and biological nanoscale systems that concern applications in biotechnology and medicine, quantum information processing and optoelectronics.

Abstract

ECMI is synonymous with European Mathematics for Industry and organizes successful biannual conferences. The 14th European Conference for Mathematics in Industry held in Leganés (Madrid) focused on Aerospace, Information and Communications, Materials, Energy and Environment, Imaging, Biology and Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Finances and other topics including Education in Industrial Mathematics and web learning. Attendees came from all over the world. Overall, these proceedings give a lively overview of the importance of mathematical modeling, analysis and numerical methods when addressing and solving problems from today’s real world applications. The accessible presentation of real problems from industry and finance, modeling, solutions via appropriate numerical and mathematical techniques are a source of fresh ideas and inspiration for mathematicians. Engineers and scientists in application fields may find useful ideas and techniques presented in familiar contexts that may help them to solve related problems in industry. Educators may find discussions of novel teaching experiences and examples from industrial contexts that could be useful devising curricula which include industrial mathematics and web learning.

Abstract

Nowadays we are facing numerous and important imaging problems: nondestructive testing of materials, monitoring of industrial processes, enhancement of oil production by efficient reservoir characterization, emerging developments in noninvasive imaging techniques for medical purposes - computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), X-ray and ultrasound tomography, etc. In the CIME Summer School on Imaging (Martina Franca, Italy 2002), leading experts in mathematical techniques and applications presented broad and useful introductions for non-experts and practitioners alike to many aspects of this exciting field. The volume contains part of the above lectures completed and updated by additional contributions on other related topics: a general presentation and introduction (Moscoso), X-ray tomography (Natterer), Electromagnetic imaging (Dorn, Bertete-Aguirre, Papanicolaou), coherent imaging in telecommunications in a multiple input-multiple output setup (Dorn), polarization based optical imaging (Moscoso), topological derivatives used in shape reconstruction related to inverse scattering problems (Carpio, Rapún), Point interactions (Dell'Antonio, Figari, Teta).
