Abstract

"The 3D characterization and modelling of geological and geomorphological structures on the Earth, terrestrial planets, satellites and minor bodies in the Solar System poses common problems to different science communities. 3D Digital Geological Models covers two important aspects: (i) remote sensing techniques (e.g. photogrammetry, photoclinometry, LIDAR, laser altimetry) allowing the quantitative characterization of outcrops and geomorphological features, and (ii) innovative 3D interpretation and modelling strategies allowing to obtain new or (more) quantitative results on terrestrial and extra-terrestrial structures. 3D Digital Geological Models is a collection of the most relevant contributions in a volume that will be of interest for the community that is actively working on these topics, but also for a wider community of potential users of the techniques that the editors of this volume are developing. In particular, contributions from students and researchers focusing on more quantitative characterization workflow in their projects will be very interesting. Case studies will include small- to large-scale project on the Earth (e.g. fracturing in carbonate rocks, folding and thrusting in sedimentary sequences, sedimentology, fluid/rock interaction, ductile shear zones, mining projects, applications to hydrocarbon studies, etc.), on terrestrial planets (e.g. magmatism, tectonics, and craters on Mars), and on minor bodies in the Solar System. In the latter category, interesting contributions on the 67P/Churyumov Gerasimenko Comet, recently surveyed by the Rosetta Mission (some of the editors have recently published on Nature their results on the comet) will be discussed."--
