Contrairement à ce que l'on affirme trop souvent, les contes de fées ne traumatisent pas les jeunes lecteurs. Ils répondent de façon précise et irréfutable à leurs angoisses, en les informant des épreuves à venir et des efforts à accomplir. Tel est en effet le postulat de ce livre majeur où Bruno Bettelheim nous éclaire sur la fonction thérapeuthique de ces contes pour l'enfant et l'adolescent jusqu'à la puberté. Grâce à cet ouvrage, illustré d'exemples tirés d'un patrimoine sans âge, des "Mille et une nuits" aux frères Grimm, de "Cendrillon" à "Blanche-Neige" et à la "Belle au bois dormant", nous n'avons plus, nous parents, le même regard sur ces contes de fées qui offrent à nos enfants une chance de se comprendre mieux au sein du monde complexe qu'ils vont devoir affronter.
